I have aol, which i am not sure even works on linux, but linux is not recognizing my modem. I dont know what to do?

There are many possibilities here. For starters:

Do you have a winmodem (i.e., performs most tasks in software rather than hardware)?

If you have a hardware modem, what settings are you using (port, interrupt, etc.)?

Is your modem internal or external (won't affect configuration or performance, but may help with diagnostics)?

Have you reviewed the kernel messages at bootup to see what serial ports are recognized?

Additional info appreciated. Critical importance: what modem are you using (brand, model, interface, etc.)? Second: which version of Linux are you using?

Bottom line: with more information, you are very likely to be able to support your modem under Linux (although I don't believe AOL will work properly).

My modem is used only for connecting to the internet. HSP56 micro modem, uses fifo buffers, 8 data bit connection. Connection settings- hardware (RTS/CTS). It uses compressed data and error control. Max speed 115200, port : com3.

You have a winmodem. A good starting point is www.linmodems.org for information about how to research what drivers are available for your modem. Winmodems are designed to work only under Windoze (even DOS is not supported). If you wish to use your winmodem under Linux you will need a driver that emulates the Windoze functions that the modem relies on.
