There are many possibilities here. For starters:
Do you have a winmodem (i.e., performs most tasks in software rather than hardware)?
If you have a hardware modem, what settings are you using (port, interrupt, etc.)?
Is your modem internal or external (won't affect configuration or performance, but may help with diagnostics)?
Have you reviewed the kernel messages at bootup to see what serial ports are recognized?
Additional info appreciated. Critical importance: what modem are you using (brand, model, interface, etc.)? Second: which version of Linux are you using?
Bottom line: with more information, you are very likely to be able to support your modem under Linux (although I don't believe AOL will work properly).
