I'm about to throw myself into a ravine. I've been fighting to get my mousewheel to work for a good 5 hours now, and am now at my wit's end. This is what the Input Device section from my XF86Config-4 looks like:

Can you find the drivers for your Lotitech mouse model?

Just a trial -

After starting the system in the GUI mode. Open a shell prompt and type the command -

mouseconf

This will open a window to configure the mouse. Select the Intellimouse drivers and see it that helps...

I had to edit files as follows:

The XF86Config, I edited like this:

Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2" (Added the "IM")
Device "/dev/psaux"
Buttons 5 (had to add this line)
ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

And the XF86Config-4 edit:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" (added the "IM")
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "off"
Option "Buttons" "5" (had to add this line)
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

That got it working for me. HTH!

Ok, tried both of those suggestions. I tried many different settings in mouseconf including the Intellimouse PS/2. None worked. My next question is: how important is the "Identifier" tag in XF86Config-4? Is it arbitrarily assigned or is it integral that it be set correctly?

My method for getting the scroll wheel to work is almost identical to DVOM's.
The identifier should be "Mouse0" in most configurations,I believe.

What browser are you using? I couldn't get NS4.x to work with scrolling. Mozilla and Opera work.

Mozilla 0.9.4. When I did run Netscape 4.76 the scroll wheel worked fine.I'll check later for details.

to get mine to work I just ran mouseconfig and set up my mouse as a MS intellimouse. (it's an IBM optical) and then did a reboot and it worked fine.

Are you using the PS/2 adapter or is the mouse plugged into the USB port?

If sombody has trouble running the mouse from the USB port,you can try adding this line to /etc/modules.conf:
alias mouse usbmouse
Seems to work pretty good if you have kernel 2.2.18 or later.
