Well I have finally got in.
I got to a screen where I cvould change the display options.
There was a section that asked me to measure the vertical and horisontal sises of the screen and enter it manually. I did this and hey presto.
But......everythime I boot up it askes me to typr root and my password and then I have to type startx. Any ways round this?

Glad that you were able to configure the GUI correctly!

First, did you select during the installation to load the GUI directly and not the CUI? I dont know if there is a command to change this but may be lynch can help us!
