Hello,
Just installed Red HAT 8 and do not get any sound.
Soundcard configuration in gnome did not detect my sound card properly.
What must I do?

It may be that you have to open a mixer and turn the volume up.A lot of times it's turned down by default.
If that doesnt work,do this:
Open an xterm and type:

su -c "sndconfig" (with the quotes)

and press enter.It'll ask for your password.Type that in and press enter and the sndconfig utility should appear and walk you through configuration.
Dont worry if you dont see any characters appear while entering your password-that's normal.

Hello,

I tried to go into the mixer but get the following error.

I was unable to open your audio device.
Please check to see if you have permision to open /dev/mixer and make sure you have sound support compiled in your kernal.
could not get into sndconfig either, says command not found.
I am running Redhat 8 as well as an AWE 64.

edit: Lynch smacks forehead repeatedly:
The reason for the command not found was I said type sndconfig when it should have been /sbin/sndconfig.Sorry,ring02.That should do it after you login as root.
Also do a lsmod,(again as root) and look for a line like:
snd-card-awe64 or snd-card-sb or somthing similiar
There should be a number of entries under the snd- prefix..

Hello,

This problem has been resolved.
Problem was the sound card was being recognized but disabled.
Had to turn plug and play os in the BIOS off for it to recognize my sound card.

Yeah,doing that helps a lot with hardware detection.I leave that bios option disabled in every comp I get my hands on,regardless of what OS is installed.
Glad to hear(no pun intended )you got the sound card working
