Back up the sensitive data for any of these programs.

There are viruses that cause this behavior.....have you done a scan? If you do not have an AV program, Computer Associates has a new updated online scan at their website. Look at e-Trust online scan. That's a start.

After running a full virus scan, download and run these two programs:

Spybot - Search & Destroy (if you haven't got the program installed already)

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

When finished Reboot and test running any programs that didn't run before. If you still have problems then run ExeFix08 http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html

I would suggest downloading both programs before running SpyBot, that way if you need ExeFix, you have it on hand.

Let us know how it works out.

Since EXE files are not running, do the EXEFIX run first to fix up the registry.

If this program does NOT run (you get the same message), then it was the SWEN virus which also corrupts the COM key

Then, download EXEFIX08.INF from the same site above.

To run it, select the file, right mouse, install. (this will correct the EXE problem)

Then, download and run the SWEN Removal tool. It will fix the other registry entries that were modified.

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_remtext.php?id=swen

If the EXEFIX runs, then the virus was other than SWEN.

After, you should still do a full virus scan with updated definitions to check.

Also, go into the options of your antivirus and change any that say Automatic, to say Ask Me. (or the equivalent).

You always want the AV to tell you what it found (the virus name) and ask you what to do. You can then tell it to attempt to quarantine the virus.

Now, you will always know if you get infected, and also the virus name.

I'm attaching a file that should correct problems for both the exe and othr swen related registry corruptions in one fell swoop.

You must rename it swen.inf

If the icon does not change from a text file icon to an "inf" icon it has not been renamed correctly.

Once it has the new icon, just right click on it and select "install"
