ngpw36 application causing pop ups
I have an application running when I first boot into windows xp named ngpw36, this application gives me adblaster2 pop ups, they stop when I end the application. To delete the application completely seems a bit tricky, I tried deleting a couple of files in system32 that are associated with the program (one exe and one dll), whenever these files are deleted they reappear under a different name (always numbers e.g. 11586.exe & 11586.dll) these .exe files are accompanied by the name E.S.D Technologies inc, these run as processes. I have tried all the usual spybot, ad aware etc scans, they seem to kill it but it always reappears on reboot. Any solutions would be most appreciated.

go to here and download 'Hijack This!'.
First make a folder on your computer in my documents called Hijackthis and then Unzip it to that folder.
Then doubleclick the Hijackthis.exe.
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

first copy these files and zip them and send to submit@thespykiller.co.uk with a short note referring to this thread
C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.dll
c:\windows\system32\adprot.exe

Download pocket killbox from http://download.broadbandmedic.com/Killbox.exe put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

O2 - BHO: ngsh33.clsIS - {941CA48C-3984-4E7D-AAF8-8755ED76EB50} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysIdle] C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.exe

now run killbox and paste each of these lines into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X button, when it says reboot now, say no and continue to paste the lines in in turn and follow the above procedure every time, DO NOT let it reboot yet

C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.dll
c:\windows\system32\adprot.exe

NOTE: if you do a search in the c:\windows\system32 folder you might find other pairs of numbered files with an .exe file and a .dll with the same numbers. Any you find add them to the killbox and delete them at the same time, As you have found out if you try to delete one without the other they are recreated

then Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box, press OK . The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of that Temp folder.

then go to C:\windows\temp and select EVERYTHING except temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete all that and then do the same for C:\temp

1) Open Control Panel
2) Click on Internet Options
3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
4) You may also want to check the box "Delete all offline content"
5) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the temporary internet files
6) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that websites have placed on your hard drive

then
Reboot &

Download and unzip or install this program/application if you haven't already got it. If you have it, then make sure it is updated and configured as described

AdAware SE from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download
and while you are at the adaware site download and install http://www.lavasoft.de/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml
and run it before the main adaware scan and follow it's directions
Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least SE1R19 09.11.2004 or a higher number/later date

Set up the Configurations as follows:

General Button
Safety:
Check (Green) all three.

Click on "Proceed"

Please deselect "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

Click on "Scan Now"

Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

Run an online antivirus check from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites
http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
http://www.commandondemand.com/eval/index.cfm
http://www.freedom.net/viruscenter/o...iruscheck.html
http://info.ahnlab.com/english/
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/AntiVirusCntr.asp

reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

I think you've cracked it!!
Carried out all the instructions, after initially deleting the system 32 files with killbox they managed to regenerate under a different number, but I deleted those as well using killbox.

Hoping this log looks OK!

Thank you for your expertise

Looks OK now

I did say that you would need to look in system 32 folder and see if there are any more pairs of numbered files and add them all to the killbox list so hopefully that has cleared them

Turn off system restore by following instructions here
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01111912274039
That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.

go here http://forums.techguy.org/t208517/s.html for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.

a "ngpw36" solution
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Hi, my name is Justin White i was recently having pop-up problems due to some file called "ngpw36" but i have figured out a pretty easy way to solve this and all you need is "hijackthis" and "Norton 2002 or higher".

1. download hijackthis (you can do so with the link provided below)
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/downloads.htm

2. open hijackthis and go to "Do a system scan and save log". when the scan is finished you will see a button called "fix checked" do not click this button unless you have found the following entries only

O2 - BHO: ngsh33.clsIS - {941CA48C-3984-4E7D-AAF8-8755ED76EB50} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysIdle] C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.exe

3. If you have not found the entries above there is no need to worry. next is to search the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\53530.dll
C:\windows\system32\adprot.exe

once you have found any of these files (if you do, and if you don't thats OK) do not delete them yet, get a piece of paper and take note of the all the files in the system32 folder that are named by numbers like the first two above (for example: 53530.exe). once you having taken note of all the files with number names next take note of all files in the system32 folder that have a name close to relating to a website or service (for example: toolbar elite, sexlist, miraclesearch or things of this sort) these kind of files should never be in the system32 folder also pay attention to unusual icons or icons you have never seen because they may be some you need to jot down.

4. after you have taken note of these if you have Norton 2002 or higher you need to open the program called wipe info if you don't have wipe info get it or you can email me at jmextreme713@yahoo.com and send me you address and name and i will mail Norton 2002 to your home.
once you have opened wipe info i want you to go back to your system 32 folder and highlight all the files that you have taken note of and even the ones you have second thoughts about and drag these files over to the wipe info window and (remember you must have all the files in the window so you can delete them all at the same time) now then click the button "wipe all". Now heres the trick if you have properly dragged over all files that are harmful to your system when you reboot they will no longer exist in your system32 folder but if they are still there that means more harmful files are still in that folder so which means you need to do some more searching in the system32 folder.

5. once you have clicked wipe all you must now go to "run" and type temp after you click ok a folder will pop-up and you need to delete all the contents of that folder. once that is done go to "control panel" and click on "INTERNET Options" and go to the "general" tag at the top if you already are not there next go to delete files and delete cookies then click ok. and now reboot your system.

6. this step is optional but i recommend it. now you need to download some kind of "spy-ware remover" such as "Microsoft AntiSpyware" or "Spybot" or "pest patrol" most spy-ware remover application are a free download. next after you have downloaded some "spy-ware remover" scan your system for additional spy-ware.

If you have any questions or comments you reach me at my email address which is jmextreme713@yahoo.com

Good Luck
