hi, you must have had look2me on your computer at some time as those host entries are for look2me, which puts spyware and ads on your system

this is a uninstaller link for look2me, Delete the folder if there is one and do a search for any instances of look2me after running the instructions and the uninstaller.

then have hijack this fix those host entries

Keep your fingers crossed, I think we may have got it as the host entries and new files are not showing up.

However run the Killbox and follow the drill to delete this on reboot:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\guard.tmp

Then, reboot in Safe Mode, run HijackThis and check and fix this entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

>> Delete the WinTools folder in c:\Program Files\Common Files while still in Safe Mode

For those monitoring, this is a new "look2ME" variant not removed by the old fix tools.

Post a new Scanlog and a new "findit.bat" log just to confirm this is holding up.

Update:

Had a power outage in my neighborhood last night before I had a chance to implement the above, the machine has virtually ground to a halt with several new entries appearing in the task manager. If I get a chance to get hijackthis etc running I'll post up it's information.

Thanks again for all your help Rog!

Hopefully it's just the usual adware (wintools etc) stuff which we didn't completely knock out and not the vx2/look2me crud. But be sure to post the results of findit.bat as well. Then do not reboot the computer after posting.

PC was fine when I rebooted today. Followed above instructions after removing the WinTools entry with HijackThis, went to delete the WinTools folder but wasn't present in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\

After rebooting it seems to have disappeared from the HijackThis log.

edit whoops, I don't like this:

Quote:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Setup]
"Asynchronous"=dword:00000000
"DllName"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\h60qlgd5160.dll"
Run regedit and navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Setup]

Right click on and delete "setup"

Reboot and delete:

C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\h60qlgd5160.dll

... other than that all looks well. Feel free to mark the thread "solved" using the Thread Tools tab and if you haven't purged and reset the System Restore cache, go ahead and do so:

You're most welcome. Should the problem not stay fixed, just repost to this thread and we will have another round at it.

There are a couple more things you need to check.

First navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder.See if you have a bunch of hosts.bak or backup file there.

See if your recycle bin is functioning properly.

Also Click Here and download the VX2Finder.exe tool. Click on the VX2Finder.exe and then click on the Restore Policy button. Close VX2Finder and restart your computer.

Have just checked and "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" contains:

hosts
services
hosts.20041205-221111.backup
hosts.20041205-214054.backup
hosts.20041206-041119.backup
hosts.20041205-215131.backup
hosts.20041205-221035.backup
hosts.20041205-221041.backup
lmhosts.sam
networks
protocol

I won't attempt to delete this until you guys give it the say so as I've got the problem described below.

Recycle Bin is not functioning correctly, no items are displayed yet if Empty is selected a dialog box saying "Are you sure you wish to delete these 61 files?" Y/N if Y is selected the dialog box closes, yet if Empty is again selected, the same box reappears with the same info. Also, the information bar stating total file size in the 'bin has disappeared.

Otherwise its service as normal performance/hijackthis/adaware wise.

Will try the VX2Finder and report back.

Thanks in advance,

iHATEpopups.

Delete all the hosts backup files.

After doing that, go to Start > Run, enter cmd and at the command prompt enter:

rd /s c:\recycler

reboot the computer and try deleting a new file and see if the bin functions normally.

Deleted all hosts backup files.

Tried the above and got this..

C:\>rd /s c:\recycler
C:\Recycler, Are you sure? <Y/N> Y
The system cannot find the path specified.
C:\>
