Solved: TASK MANAGER/MSCONFIG problem
task manager closes instantly when i try to open it. when i go to run "msconfig"...it does nothing. also noticed that IE would not let me type emails from ANY email provider. switched to mozilla firefox and emails work fine. THANK YOU to all the brilliant people out there willing to help!!!!!

no netstatt.exe
renamed task mgr and it ran. dont see a netstatt. ran process explorer and also searched for it. nothing found. should i continue on with next steps?

Probably should. Whatever took them out before will probably do it again.

i ran updated adaware SE, bot s&d 1.3, and i have (updated) trend pc-cillen I.S. 2005.... adware found 27 files, bot found five I/E holes and cillen found nothin(with full syst. scan). the task manager, msconfig problem is still present. next reply will b hjt log after running all those scans. u people r awesome- thank you!

Ok, you have the same problem as here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/331228-xp-disk-defragmenter-not-working-post2368714.html
Although, what you want to kill is this:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WINMX.EXE

So follow those instructions, but instead of "WINAMP6.EXE", you are looking for "WINMX.EXE" [this is a false file that is running in the system32 folder]

im trying to follow the instructions from the thread link posted above. however, i cannot get msconfig to run still. i tried re-naming it....no luck. i tried MS-MVP Doug Knox's Emergency Msconfig, Regedit, Task Manager utility....no luck. when i rename it- it says file cannot b found. when i used the doug knox app it pops up for a second or two and then disappears. oh, one other thing, i renamed task manager two days ago and it worked fine. now IT WONT WORK AGAIN (as i bang my head against monitor), haha....just kidding about the head part.

What happens if you copy msconfig to your desktop, and then rename it something like "me.com".. will it work?

You could always skip the msconfig part for now (just until you kill that file).. just get into safe mode by holding down the F8 key while your computer starts (this is before windows loads... if windows loads, then you missed the critical F8 part).

Have these instructions printed or in a convenient Notepad (or Wordpad) file so you can view them in Safe Mode. Have "show hidden (or all) files" checked in Folder Options > View in case you have to search for any hidden files to delete. Also ensure you do NOT have "hide file extensions..." enabled in Folder Options > View

If HijackThis has not been downloaded or copied to a permanent folder, move it there before beginning.



Then:

1 >> Restart in Safe Mode. Instructions here if you need them:http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406

2 >> In Safe Mode run HijackThis and check and "fix" the following entries:

Additional cleanup instructions: Go to the Control Panel > Internet Options applet. Clear the Temporary Internet Cache, History and Offline Content. Go to the Programs tab and select "reset web settings", including your home page if it has been altered. You can reset that later to what you desire.

Go to Start > Run, enter %temp% and then click Edit > Select All. Right click on the selected files and folders and delete them

Test msconfig and Task Manager while you are in Safe Mode.

The scanlog looks fine, but a word of advice: I see "limeshop" in there -- and you can be almost certain that the orginal source of this problem was due to malware file sharing downloads. You will be back if you do not curb or entirely abandon its use.
