Solved: Adware mllmm.dll removal
Good Morning All!

I use Windows XP and recieved this message from my firewall:
VirusScan-Warnung!
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mllmm.dll
Adware-Virtumundo

I cannot remove it using the virus scan software. From reading earlier posts, I gathered that I should scan with Hijack This! and the resulting log is printed below. (not that I know what to do with this information.)

What should I do next? I use my computer exclusively for word processing for my work and have never ventured into these areas before. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Selkie

Hi there!
I'm not too sure whether this will work or not as the symptons are not classic ---> will give it a go though!

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this
    Quote:
    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....
  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:
    Quote:
Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmm.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:
    Quote:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmllm.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
    • O20 - Winlogon Notify: mllmm - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmm.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Here goes nothing...but I think it worked!
Hi David,

Thank you for your clear and understandable reply (even to a complete computer newbie like myself).

I did as instructed and it seems to have worked.

There is a bit more to do

List programs that can be removed using Windows 'Add or Remove'

This utility "List Installed Programs" will provide a list of installed programs. It is found half way down the page. Click on the little arrow and then the download icon that is on the new window that opens up. You can download the script and run it from your hard disk or run it without downloading.
When asked to enter the PC details - leave it blank and click OK. Ask to view the results and copy the Notepad list. Paste it in a reply to this thread.

Hi David!
Alright, I managed that too. Here are the results. Why does it show 2 copies of Hijackthis? Did I do something weird?

cheers,

Selkie

step 3 done too
Hi David!

Slotchbar refuses to be deleted (no msg., it simply pings, blinks and does nothing). For the other three, I got a msg. (in German) claiming that a problem had arisen when deleting and perhaps the files had already been deleted. I chose "delete from program listing". I hope that was correct.
This is all a bit beyond my ken.

a grateful Selkie

Clean Log!!
How's everything running? or ?

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore. In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

running wonderfully
Hi David!

Process complete and everything is running wonderfully, fast and easily. You have spent a great deal of time on this with me. How can I recompense you? A box of German chocolates? A donation to your favourite charity? I don't suppose you need a paper analysed?

Thank you for all your assistance. I am very, very, very grateful.

That's fine!
What part of Germany are you from, i've just come back from Berlin on a school trip!

You can donate $5 or whatever the equivalent euros are to help keep the site running; we offer a voluntary service here so i cannot take money myself. As you may imagine the website costs a lot to run, and any donations we kindly recieve go direct to that!

If you wish to, please do it via affero - there is a link in my signature that says "rate me"; you can rate my help there also if you wish.

Of course it is not compulsory by any means, and a thank you will most certainly surffice!
