Perhaps I was just lucky ridding my computer of the Spyaxe by doing the following:

I had already downloaded ewido and other "parts" of the steps to take to try to remove this malware. I decided to try ewido FIRST and by jove, my troubles are over. This was the most persistent, annoying and aggravating "thing" I have ever dealt with---yet.
I re-ran Adaware, Spybot, Spywareblaster and Spy Sweeper after ewido had run. Spybot came up with smitfraud.C at a user setting but could not remove it. I re-booted and I see no evidence of Spyaxe---nothing in the Sys Tray; no icons, no popups wanting me to "buy" their software for an answer to the malware problem.
Perhaps I was just lucky but you may want to try this to rid yourself of the Spyaxe parasite. If it works for you then you will also save some time by omitting those other steps. Good luck to you and I hope it works.
BYW, I downloaded the free X days for use of ewido and Spy Sweeper.

Mogor, I didn't have any problems with my connection(DSL)to the internet. Perhaps that is another problem that may or may not be associated with the Spyaxe malware. Wish I could help you with that. Good luck and I will continue reading your thread and hoping that you soon have success.

Well my connection (cable) was working fine until my comp got invected. Then the connection was real slow and it set my home page to yoursystemupdate.com. After i ran several scans to remove spyaxe the connection was none exsistent. Then I tried to look at the run ipconfig, but the black window flashes then goes away. I also tried the winsockfix and LSPfix niether worked. My computer is running fine now and my home page is back to google but it can't connect. Hopefully there is an easy solution to this. This is just a bad time for my comp to go down (it's finals week); but i took my last final this morning so im in no hurry. Except to get back to playing WOW .

Go to Start | Run and type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter.(the space between g and \ is required)
A DOS window will open briefly and then close after the DNS cache is flushed out.

Didn't Work. My computer detects when i unplug and plug in the cable. But the connection status says limited or no connectivity. It should be able to get a connection. The correct port lights on the router are light up. I even changed ports to be sure.

Alright but to finish up what we were doing, please do this:

Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous system restore points, then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

To turn off system restore, on the Desktop, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a new restore point, click on StartAll ProgramsAccessoriesSystem Tools and then select System Restore.

In the System Restore wizard, select Create a restore point and click the Next button.

Type a name for your new restore point then click on Create.

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD for added protection.

Read here for info on how to tighten your security.

Delete your temporary files:

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start - Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel - Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the recycle bin.

The infection is not gone.

  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • It is a self extracting file.
  • Doubleclick the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your desktop.
  • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now and post a new HijackThis log.
