sure, all you have to do it turn off system restore:
start\run:"sysdm.cpl"\Sytem Restore\turn off

Then turn it back on:
start\run:"sysdm.cpl"\Sytem Restore\turn on (it will automatically create on restore point)

Dear awalker 0878 --

I am hoping you can help me. I see you responded here to a problem similar to mine.

My Computer -- a Dell Dimension 8100 Running Windows ME, now starts up, briefly shows the Windows ME screen, then flips to a blue screen with words to this effect:

WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR. YOU MUST RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. SYSTEM HALTED.

At that point, neither the mouse or keyboard works, so you can't even press Control+Alt+Delte. You can only hold the computer start button down until the machine turns off. Then, on restarting, it comes up in Safe Mode, and all programs and data are there. I tried running system restore, and picked every date available over the last three months, but each time, it ended restarting with the BLUE SCREEN and the WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR message. Any ideas?

Well, I did install a new dsl modem from Bellsouth -- we switched our Internet Service from cable modem to DSL. The modem came with a CD, which I used to install whatever software the modem needed. That's the only thing I can think of.

You should be able to configure the DSL connection by using a command called rasphone.

start\run:"rasphone"
click new
fill connect via broadband
NEXT
enter a name like "Bellsouth"
NEXT
Fill username and password fields
If you want you can select save info for yourself or other users

Now you can access the internet without any extra software from your ISP!

You never answered my question. You have a load of (04) items starting that you don't need at startup too.

Sorry for not answering your question. Yes, I tried every possible date of previous restorations with System Restore. The were about 15 possible back up dates, going as far back as about 90 days. I did this in safe mode, then followed the instructions. Although it appeared that I was rebooting to a previous system setup, when the system finally rebooted, it was always back to the blue screen with the Windows Protection Error message in it. From that screen, I can do nothing. I have to close down by holding down the power button on the computer until the CPU turns off. Then, when I reboot, I am in safe mode again.

By the way, right now, I don't care whether I can have internet access. I just want access to my computer!! So, if we can get the computer working, I can save my key files to a Zip drive. Then I can try again to hook up the Bellsouth DSL software. I am not going to run the modem through this computer anyway. I have hooked up the modem to another computer in the house. So, now all I will need is to hook up a wireless adapter to receive the signal.

Thanks so much for your help.

Have you or can you try an overinstall of Windows ME? What do the Dell CDS read that came with the system? I'm not sure if they are FULL RESTORE cds, which you don't want to do unless they give you an option of just reinstalling the operating system, not putting it back to original factory condition, which means you'd lose all of the files.

The other option is to take the drive out and slave it to another computer, burn your data, and go from there.
