Unhappy Windows Protection Error

My brother has given me his sick Dell Dimension 4100 under Win ME. He has been infected by viruses and by spyware.

I do not know the history of all his problems as he gave up and got a new Dell Win XP PC.

I believe he got rid of apparent viruses as McCafee runs and finds viruses only in restore cabs, but there is a "romahere3" startup still in this system.

The system boots and you get a "Windows protection error you need to restart your computer" message.

Upon powering off it runs in safe mode only. While in safe mode I cannot get rid of this Romahere3 start up item which shows up in msconfig under start up.

What I am trying to do is to move all his MY Documents files to a MAXTOR external hard drive which I need to install but will not work under Safe Mode.

Also safe mode does not recognize the DVD Rom drive so I can not load in other software.

Once I get his data off I can go and do a system reload using he Dell disk because I will use this machine for my grandkids to play games and as a backup to my other Dell.

Appreciate any help you can give on what to do next.

Get HiJack This V1.99.1 http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe - double click the DL file and click UNZIP letting it extract to its default folder C:\Program FIles\HiJackThis, run it from there, DO NOT fix anything, post the log here.

Thanks for quick reply but this machine is not set up to connect to the internet. My brother had a dial up connection; I have DSL which is not installed, so there is no quick way to down load anything into this machine which is basically stuck in safe mode.

By the way while insafe mode I tied to do a systems restore by going back a year and it started then quit. I think it tried to run the system restore in regular ME mode which of course fails.

One other point is the Dell 19" monitor on this machine was working under ME (not Safe Mode) but in low resolution format (as if it were in in Safe Mode). When trying to reset it to a higher resolution it said ok but when it rebooted it did not get to the higher resolution so I suspect the video driver is bad.

I downloaded a new one from Dell for this machine and I burned it on a CD but can not access the CD to load it in in Safe Mode.

You have no active AntiVirus!

Get the free AVG 7 install it, check for updates and run a full scan

AVG 7 - http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
==================
Get all of these and/or verify you have the current versions

SpywareBlaster 3.4 http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpyBot V1.4 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
AdAware SE 1.06 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
MS AntiSpy - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en (XP and W2K only)

DownLoad them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates
and then run AdAware, MS AntiSpy (W2k/XP) and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize
==================

DownLoad http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract..._download.html
Close all browser windows,UnZip the file, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix"

==================
Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\MWSEARCH.DLL

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Most Problems Fixed

Thank you so much for all your help. I have been on vacation and came back and have been working on my problem.

I have done almost everything you have said to do and most of it has worked.

I have this machine hooked up to the internet; have installed Symantic Internet Security 2006 Anti virus and AVG 7 and cleaned up all the viruses also have installed spwareblaster, Spybot and adaware and run them several times and I think I am clean.

The only problem I have now is I can not run MS Antispy because it requires IE6 (I have 5.50) to be loaded and I have had trouble running the program download from MS download either from my Netscape 7.2 browser directly from microsoft downloads or thru windows update using IE 5.50.

Any suggestions on that?

Anyway below is the current log from Hijack this. Please review and thanks again.

Hi, chasav, and welcome to TSG. I see you started your own thread for this problem, which is good, so please keep replying to that one.

Spyware & Virus problems gone; IE 6.0 Download Problem
The link you sent me on getting IE 6.0 to download and replace IE 5.50 did not work. I have Netscape on my Dell machine 7.2 (Win ME) so I am wondering can you just uninstall IE 6.0 and try to download?

I am not sure if my problem was related to the spyware/virus problem.
Thanks.

IE 6.0 Problem
I tried the last link to download the IE 6.0 upgrade from Microsoft and got the same failure problem; however there was a message this time that said:

"Extracting file failed. Caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file) or corrupted cabinet file".

Now when I started to work on this original problem the computer had McAfee anti virus software loaded (which I have since replaced with Symantec). McAfee reported that there were many viruses in the Restore cabs. Do you think this has something to do with this problem? Also can you get rid of old restore cabs? I now have a cleaner system than I had before and would never go back to try a system restore.

Many thanks.
