rdriv.sys ntrootkit-j
Im on windows xp i run mcafee internet security firewall and virus scanner. This is the first virus iv had in a long time. ( since i switched to mcafee from norton). From what i understand the file has been blocked from using the internet. I am completely updated, i'v done a virus scan in safemode. I just downloaded hijack this and kill box. mcafee see's the file deletes it and it just comes right back. (The firle c:\windows\system\rdriv.sys was infected by the NTRootKit-j trojan and has been deleted to complete the clean process. I click continue with what i was doing and it pops right back up again. When i had the problem i messed around a little bit and found a new program called winfire.exe, with no idea of how this program came on my computer. (it also shows on the hijackthis log)

I am new at attempting to clean stuff like this, normally i would reformat but with just doing this two days ago..i really want to try this route.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Download
rdrivRem.zip and unzip it to your desktop.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then hit enter.

Please double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program and follow the instructions on the screen. After it's completed, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder. Please post the contents of that the rdrive.txt file.


Download the trial version of Ewido Anti-Malware here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido:

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode.


Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:


Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop



Restart back into Windows normally now.


Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, save the results from the scan!


Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from the Ewido and Panda scans.

winfire.exe only shows up in my processes when it uses cpu. so either its a hidden proc..that shows up when its doing something or it runs and closes itself like every 20 seconds. obviously the two are working with each other. i might have done something i should have i tried to fix winfire.exe with hijack this..now i have two less proc. but winfire.exe will still show up. So here is a new log file if needed.

Also, after following the instructions I posted above, please do this before you post your next HijackThis log.


Right click HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: Right click DelDomains.inf and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Thank you, i'v found the source of the problem with ewido, and then ran the sys fix again. im about to run the panda scan..then hopefully it will get then winfire.exe. which isn't a threat i think it was working with the installer which has been deleted.
