Does Uninstall list use the registry installed program list to create itself ?

I believe so. I know it will show items that normally do not show just in Add/Remove Programs

Hi Phil64, If Word2000 is something you downloaded, go to Start/Search and click on the All files line. Enter Word2000 and click on Search.

What we are looking for is a line with hopefully Word2000 in yhe first section and
in the start of second C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\ .

If found, delete that line and reboot. Hopefully there will be no installation attempt.

Hi blkwlnt64

I'm just replying from work at the moment, but I'll give it a go when I get home this evening before I wade in with HJT.

Just to give you a bit of background as best I can tell, the laptop belongs to a mate of mine and is used exclusively by his kids (hence all the spyware & crap). When they bought it, it was a refurb and came from a small dealer with an OEM installation of XP home and Word 2002. Apparently, when they got the machine home, they had problems with either running or registering word (my mate is a bit of a luddite and is very hazy on the exact nature of the problem), so they took it back and all he did was uninstall word, but left it pestering you with the install dialog box.

My mate wasn't that bothered about not having word and couldn't be bothered dragging the machine back again and so it has remained like this for a year or more.

What I suspect has happened is that the dealer messed up the OEM install of word and then rather than repairing this he just uninstalled and messed that up too. So now XP is constantly looking for the install media to complete the installation.

So that's that.
Thanks for the input, I'll let you know how I get on.

Well what I was trying to do was to avoid editing the registry or a reformat and reinstall everything.

No files to delete. I have deleted the entry in the HJT uninstall manager, but this didn't cure the problem either.

However, I have downloaded something from the Windows update site called Windows Installer Clean Up and this did the trick. So thanks for your help.

Anyway, after that little diversion it's back to Cheeseball and my original issues. To the best of your knowledge is he system fixed as far as it can be or do we have more work to do on this? What about that entry in the control panel that I can't get rid of?

Cheers
Phil

Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Don’t do anything with it yet!

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Double click WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient and let it complete.

Reboot back to Normal Mode!

  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Copy and paste WinPFind.txt in your next post here please.

Find and delete this folder: C:\Program Files\MediaGateway

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Note: If you receive an error while running option #1 like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications, choose close to terminate the application.."...then do one of the following:

1: Click on the l2mfix.bat again and choose option # 5 for Fix Autoexec.nt/cmd.exe error.
2: Alternatively, you can click the fixautont.html link in the l2mfix folder and follow the directions there to fix it manually.
Do not run the fix portion without fixing the error first.
After you have performed the procedures to fix the error, repeat the steps above to run option #1 for Run Find Log.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

Open the l2mfix folder and double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter.
Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal).
L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot.
Press any key to reboot.
After the reboot notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the log does not open, double click on it in the l2mfix folder.
