MSN thing, help/ can't boot in safe mode!!
Ya, I am so new at this stuff. Only had one serious error before...I can't turn off system restore, it asks for a reboot and will do so forever, I can't PERFORM a system restore, same problem. I accidently clicked a link that I didn't mean to and this thing self-installed and screwed me. I run ad-aware and it freezes when it takes me to the "actions" menu. I tried running Prevx1 but my trial ran out, and I tried McAfee virus scan except it has been acting up the past few days and hasn't been turning "on"/enabling and it "fixes" the stuff but it comes back. I also ran ewido, but when I do, after it gets past my registry, it locks up and crashes. Periodically I also get a NT system error that requires a restart..Thats never happened to me before...I have a HiJackThis report, don't know if it would help...I read the "Read these before you post" things, and Safe mode, gives me a whole bunch of .sys errors...Ya...

System error just now after about 10~ min of uptime...Ya
Here is the HiJackThis report, dunno if you guys need it but some people ask for it? So I dunno...

Sorry for my noobness and thank you guys for ANY help you can give <3!
Edit: It seems, that whenever I run Ad-aware, McAfee, Ewido, Prevx1, or Panda's active scan. My computer locks and gets that "authoritive" NT shutdown. :/

Hi, DeviantAngel

Welcome to the forum.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
  • Right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Small problem with that,
It says to boot in Safe Mode by tapping F8 at Windows or whatever..
And I tried just pressing Y but it just closes...Ya
This is kind of an emergency since my classes are online and I need my computer, so do you know anything else about it? The SDFix won't run unless I am in Safe Mode. :/
Thank you though.

I want it to try it in Normal Mode. Standby, I will be back with a fix.

Hi, DeviantAngel

Most fixes require the user to boot in Safe Mode. Lets try this.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vssms32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\vssms32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [explorer] C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\two.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ExploreUpdSched] C:\WINDOWS\system32\swinlpem.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{A4-49-92-22-ZN}] c:\windows\system32\okdsregl.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PSDream] "C:\Program Files\PSDream\PSDream.exe"
O4 - Startup: TA_Start.lnk = C:\TIGEN001.exe
O4 - Startup: Think-Adz.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\system32\swinlpem.exe
O23 - Service: Windows Overlay Components - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\vvkkydj.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.

Go to Start->Run, type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS window will be displayed. At the prompt type the following (Including the quotes) and press Enter after each line:

SC Stop "Windows Overlay Components"
SC Delete "Windows Overlay Components"
Exit

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
PSDream

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vssms32.exe
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\two.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\swinlpem.exe
    c:\windows\system32\okdsregl.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\swinlpem.exe
    C:\TIGEN001.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\vvkkydj.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
  • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post a fresh Hijackthis log along with the Dr.Web CureIt and ActiveScan reports.

Well, I can't complete the DrWeb-Cureit or the ActiveScan because I get these NT authoritive restarts about half way through each. But I do have most of my main HD on Active Scan..I will go ahead and post it with the HiJackThis log, dunno what good it will do...

See attached. I will also try to keep conducting these scans until I hear otherwise from you.

Hi, DeviantAngel

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Hi, DeviantAngel

Seems to me that Windows required system files are corrupted. Malware is discarded.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Perform these pocedures. You may be able to recover.

Click Start then Run, type Prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete.

Click Start, all Programmes, Accessories, System Tools to run Disc Clean up, then from System Tools, also run Disc Defragmenter.

Click Start then Run, type ChkDsk /R then press enter, type Y to confirm for next boot, press enter then reboot.

Windows will appear to load normally then either the monitor will show progress or the screen will go blank, do not disturb this.

This will take an hour or so before it gets to the desktop.

Click Start then Run, type SFC /Scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD. Windows File Protection dialog will show a blue onscreen progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot.

If you do not have an XP CD you can borrow a same version as was originally installed XP CD, if you downloaded SP2 then you need an SP1 XP CD.

Download and install Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run Tune Up Disc Clean Up

Run Tune Up Registry Clean Up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, which will take a few minutes and need a reboot. You should disable the antivirus programme to run this and check it is running after the reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor.

Keep me posted.

Well, I do not have the XP discs, this is a preinstalled system. However, I do have the factory recovery discs, except they will restore my computer to the factory shipped.
Here is my issue: I have two hard drives, one 160 which contains my OS, and another 320. The 320 just has random stuff on it, but I could put everything onto that drive and restore. But, the factory settings only had one hard drive, I installed the 320 myself. So, I am worried that if I restore will I have to partition((Which formats the drive)) the 320 again? Or could I just disable the drive((Unplug it?)) and it should work fine if I restore and just plug it back in? Thank you.

How were you able to transfer the OS to the 160 drive if originally was installed in the 320?

It is possible to run SFC /Scannow without the CD. See this link:

http://ask-leo.com/i_dont_have_an_in..._need_one.html

If still unable to run SFC, you may need to modify your registry:

Please download FileFind from Atribune.
Unzip the file and save it to your desktop.

To run FileFind, please do the following:
  • Click on FileFind.exe
  • In the box labeled "Directory"
    • Enter: C:\
  • In the box labeled "File"
    • Enter: Explorer.ex_ (Note it ends with an underscrore).
  • Now click on the "Search" button
  • Once the utility has found the files click on "Export"
  • A Notepad will open up. Please copy the entire contents of the Notepad and paste them here.
  • NOTE: The notepad is saved on your C:\ drive as "Export.txt"
