MSNmess still does not recognize connectivity. It's bundled with my OS so something still must be going on.

When the user had 'virusburst' fixed, I wonder if user was told to go into 'msconfig/startup' and disable everything and hasn't be told to reenable that which was disabled. Maybe this could account for so few'O4' entries ????

there are some disabled entries showing in the wpfind log

most aren't really needed but it won't do any harm to re enable them and it is possible one of them might be the cause of messenger not connecting

however I tend to always suspect firewalls with this sort of connection troubles

You have disabled lots of things from starting at boot time with MSconfig

doing that doesn't stop them running or being started by something else on the computer

go to start/run and type msconfig, press ok & on the start up tab enable EVERYTHING
Then on the general tab select normal start up all drivers & services
press ok & reboot

post a new HJT log please & tell us if it's working

and when you run hjt fix this one you missed last time

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmbj32 - winmbj32.dll (file missing)

Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTDrive] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvgiz.dll,startup

to my way of thinking any of these are optional as regards start up

RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
nwiz.exe /install
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Boot Optimizer\HPBootOp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe
[AlwaysReady Power Message APP] ARPWRMSG.EXE

these I think should be allowed to start with windows but they are all at your choice

RTHDCPL.EXE
C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE
rundll32.exe ftutil2.dll,SetWriteCacheMode
"c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe

these definitely don't need to start with windows

C:\Windows\Creator\Remind_XP.exe
C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPwuSchd2.exe
[Yahoo! Pager] "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe" -quiet
[MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
[MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
Compaq Connections.lnk = C:\Program Files\Compaq Connections\5577497\Program\Compaq Connections.exe

It's troubleshooter says it can't access key ports. Windows firewall is disabled. Norton is failing to load.
