| Solved: Many Issues-Can someone please chk my log? This all started a few days ago when I decided to do some "spring cleaning". I did a registry cleaning w/C-Cleaner where I got a lot of "missing shared DLL", "active x/com", "installer reference", "missing MUI reference" issues. I blindly chose to fix a bunch of these issues . I also changed my paging file size, got rid of Windows Defender, defragmented, did a chkdsk /r, ran both spyware and anti-virus scans, and did a disk clean-up. Then I started randomly losing my broadband connection. This was right at the time DST started but I don't think it's related to that. I seriously think I've over-tweaked (?) some settings somewhere and I don't know what I've done! (over-zealous newbie). My Network Connections will show both my Broadband and LAN as connected and firewalled but my internet light on my modem will go out; then My Network Connections will show my Broadband as disconnected, my LAN still connected and my internet light on my modem will be on! The DSL light stays on. I've done all the obvious checks and I seriously don't believe it's a modem problem. Can someone check my log before I make the dreaded call to Verizon? Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 AVG ANTI-SPYWARE IS ONLY FOR SYSTEMS RUNNING WIN 2K and XP (This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware) 1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process. 2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next". 3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree". 4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install". 5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray. 6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. 7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows". 8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows: 1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start. 4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine. IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button? 5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\ 6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply and a new Hijackthis log. Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection. Note: If AVG Anti-Spyware "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this: 1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder. 2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.

You guys rock! Thank you sooo much for taking the time to help me. Ok, I got rid of the checked items you indicated w/HjT and ran the little clean-up program--question-why is that any different or better than running a standard Windows "disk clean-up"? It seemed a lot quicker. Now, I haven't downloaded Ewido because I'm a little leery about putting more stuff on here. Is my Avira anti-virus not considered a good program and won't I have 2 anti-virus programs running if I download Ewido? Also, I noticed in the HjT log some McAfee stuff which I thought I'd deleted. And I don't use Messenger at all --is there anyway to delete it without screwing up my MSN? I have been online for a total of 34 minutes so far this morning and my modem is behaving perfectly (of course I've probably jinxed it now by saying that!). Maybe I won't have to call Verizon after all! Yay you guys!

Never mind. Everything was hunky dory for about an hour, I was checking my email, morning news, general surfing. Then wham, I lost my connection. What's weird is as soon as my green "internet" light goes out on my modem (DSL light will stay on) and I go over to Windows "Internet Connections", it shows my Broadband icon as connected (my LAN icon always says connected/firewalled when this happens). Then I'll manually disconnect by right-clicking the Broadband icon, selecting disconnect, then reconnect again. I still think something is screwy with my settings somewhere. I did do a ipconfig /release and renew yesterday but I'm not that well-versed in ip addresses so again, I fear I'm treading in territory I probably shouldn't be. Also, I don't use Internet Explorer or at least i don't think I do. I always log on to the internet using my little MSN butterfly so I'm using MSN Explorer, right? I know that sounds ignorant but I've never really understood which browser I actually use. All I know is when I want to use 'Tools' for Internet Explorer I have to actually log on to that; my MSN Explorer doesn't have any 'Tools' options. So when I change stuff in IE, does that change stuff in MSN? I'm soooo confused. I probably need to call Verizon don't I?

You need to have only one anti-virus program running, either McAfee or Avira. AVG Anti-spyware is not an anti-virus program. It is Anti-spyware and will not affect either of the anti-virus programs.

I understand all that; here's the thing--I'm running Avira Anti-Virus and MSN Spy Sweeper. I was also using Windows Defender not realizing that it was in effect the same as Spy Sweeper, so I got rid of it. Oddly enough, it seems like a lot of the problems I've been having started about the time I removed Windows Defender 3 days ago! I stopped using McAfee about a year ago because it was giving me trouble, but it keeps showing up when I go into msconfig under services-it says the service is "stopped" but why is it even showing up there? I've already gone to the McAfee website and thought I did a complete uninstall.

I think I can safely mark this solved! I won't detail all the stuff I've done in the past few days to try and get my computer right, but thanks to everyone who's replied. Your knowledge has been beyond helpful. But something really bizarre has happened. Let me explain. I started this thread orignally because I was trying to clean up my system a bit. Then I started experiencing a messed up internet connection. I really didn't want to call my ISP because most of the time I get someone who's not real bright. Keep in mind I already did all the obvious checks on my modem like power cycling, unplugging, resetting, all that. I've also had the same set-up for 2 years and have never had a problem. So this is what I did yesterday when I was finally to the point where I was pretty much getting no connection at all. Just on a whim I decided to change my phone cord. The one I originally had came from Verizon w/my modem and it was really long. I figured maybe I'd go with a shorter cord. This is an old house with an ancient electrical system; I even have to have one of those 4-prong plug-in adapters for all the phones. Anyway, so I changed to a shorter cord. (hang in there-here comes the weird part) I rebooted everything-computer and modem. Lights were flashing, blips were blipping. When everything was done, I looked at my modem. The power, ethernet (1), wireless, and DSL lights were all on. The Wireless light was flashing periodically. The DSL light was green and steady. But...my internet light (right next to DSL light)--it was OFF. I'm not a modem expert but I know my computer and enough to know that my internet light needs to be on. Figuring I've just overdone everything into oblivion, I walked away. Being late, I decided I'd deal with this tomorrow. So this morning just for #$@-s and giggles I thought I'd check things out before I called Verizon. Yes, everything appeared the same-internet light still off, DSL green and steady, etc. But guess what? (drum roll please)--I'm completely, totally and rather quickly back ONLINE! I logged into MSN, checked my email and the weather, surfed faster than I've ever been able to. The whole time, and this is what I don't get--my internet light is STILL OFF!!!!!! I'd completely dumbfounded. I mean, huh??? Does anybody have any idea why this is? I'm terrified to reboot my computer which I need to do because I apparently have a Windows Update to download. I did set a restore point in case everything goes kooky again. But how in the world am I online, all my Network Connections show I'm connected, but no Internet light is on my modem! With all the unplugging and resetting, could it be a simple thing like the light bulb has burned out? Sorry this is so long but this will hopefully be my last post for a while! But if anyone reading this knows what I might have done, I'd sure like to know!!
