Solved: Trojan Horse - Downloader.Generic4.DEM
Hi There,

My 12 year old son opened an .exe file which was sent to him via MSN Messenger. AVG Anti-Virus tells me that this is a trojan horse called downloader.generic4.DEM which keeps installing a file in the temp folder called install.exe. It doesnt matter if I press "heal" or "move to vault" it continues to come back.

I have tried running Spybot and Ad-aware SE, Registry Mechanic but still cannot get rid of it.
I have downloaded the full trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware which picked up a number of things that were missed by Spybot and Ad-Aware, but still the problem continues.
I have also run Evidence Eliminator but still the problem continues.

The system keeps bringing up the MSN Messenger sign in box and hijacks my IE browser and redirects my firefox browser, and then the computer freezes and I have to restart the computer.

The AVG Anti-Spyware is detecting malware and new infections every few minutes.
This is one infection that keeps popping up:- Trojan.Agent.AJK which is found in the following folder C:/documents and settings/Eagles/net.exe

Below is the hijackthis log file.

Thanks, and I hope you can help.

Cheers,
Brian

Hi and welcome

Download the Trial version of Superantispyware Pro (SAS):
http://www.superantispyware.com/supe....html?rid=3132

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
· It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
· Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
· Click the Scanning Control tab.
· Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
o Close browsers before scanning
o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others unchecked.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
· On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
· On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
· On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
· After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
· Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
· It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
· To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
· Click close and close again to exit the program.
· Please paste that information here for me with a new Hijack This log.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    c:\program files\Winad Client
    C:\Documents and Settings\Eagles\Local Settings\Temp\GHYIMVBF.DLL
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NET.EXE

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Hi and thanks again,

Killbox task complete!

I didnt receive any messages you described when I clicked the "delete file " button. However when I clicked the "delete file" an AVG message did pop up with a new threat which I hadnt seen before. I clicked on the "move to vault" button on the AVG message and the computer rebooted as per the requested task in Killbox.

Is the system okay now?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Moderator,

So far so good!

The system seems stable and the browsers (particularly IE) have not popped up and are no longer being redirected.

Thanks.....your awesome and your doing a great job.....this forum is a god sent.

On a final note, can you please tell me whether the tools you have recommmended in this thread (eg: Super Antispyware, ATF Cleaner, Vundofix, ActiveScan, Killbox, etc) are safe to use on my other computers. I have 3 computers and even though the other 2 have not been infected by this recent infection, I have observed the amount of spyware and adware that has NOT been detected by the tools I normally use such as SpyBot, Ad-Aware SE, AVG Antivirus, and I feel that maybe I should use these tools to check my other computers. What are your thought?

Thanks again,
Brian

You're welcome You can use them on your other system granted it's using Windows 2000 or higher. And Vundofix, only if it has a Vundo infection.

Read here on How to tighten your computer's security settings: http://forums.techguy.org/t208517.html

Security Help Tools: http://forums.techguy.org/security/1...elp-tools.html

You can mark your thread "Solved" from the Thread Tools drop down menu.

Hi Moderator,

Houston we still have a problem

IE is still being hijacked.....SuperAntiSpyWare keeps bringing up a detection everytime I start the computer which is a Vundo Variant in C:/WINNT/System32/.......DLL
So I do the scan in SuperAntiSpyware and then remove the Adware, then I use Vundofix to really get rid of them, but when the computer reboots the little beasts are back and SuperAntiSpyware pops up again with another detection.

Pleeeease help me to remove them once and for all

Thanks
Brian
