Solved: Got a virus/spyware. HJT log included.
I am using Mcafee Security Suite 2006. I have a AMD Ahtlon 2200+ (1.7 ghz) and have 768 meg RAM installed. I use Win XP Prp (SP2) and use IE7 as my internet browser.
I was downloading a program last night but deleted it as it was useless. This morning when I switched on my PC, my mcafee bootscan reported that it found two viruses called blah123.exe and is67112[1].exe. Both are a type of New Win32 virus. I deleted them both and go on my business with my PC for the day.

Every time I reboot my PC the same message as before appears. Mcafee bootscan reports that it has found a virus. The blah123.exe was found in my c:\ and is67112[1].exe is found in c:\documents and settings\LocalService\Temporary internet Files\Content.IE5\CON0Z6NA\. How can this be when I have deleted them? When I go in my C:\ , the file is no where to be found. The same goes to the temporay internet files. Is there a way of deleted them? The files are not detected by Mcafee virus scan (even in safe mode or normal mode) or even when I run spybot. The files are not even detected when I run the scan in safe mode. Only detects the files on PC startup. Could anyone help me out as this is very annoying.

Hi Welcome to TSG!!

Click Start - Run - and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find:

Windows Server Management Services (WSMSPSVC)

Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.
Exit the Services utility.


Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

Click Here and download Killbox and save it to your desktop.



Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: &Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=
O23 - Service: Windows Server Management Services (WSMSPSVC) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\msngr.exe



Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Close Hijackthis.


Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
Put a tick by Delete on Reboot.
In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following line.

C:\WINDOWS\msngr.exe

Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter the file name.
It will ask for confimation to delete the file.
Click Yes.
It will ask for confimation to reboot now.
Click Yes.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that the file does not exist.
If your computer does not restart automatically then please restart it manually.
If you get an error message "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

After reboot please post your hijackthis log again and don't cut off the top this time.

Hi,
Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I cannot press stop on the Windows server Management Services on the service status option/field. All the options appear dimmed. But however I can choose disabled on the drop down box on Startup type. Shall I proceed anyway? Thanks in advance!

Hi again. Thanks for your prompt reply. I have succesfully removed the virus without doing what you recommended me to do. I removed it by deleting it by mcafee and running a program like windows washer called privacy suite . In privacy suite, I chose the option which let you wipe the free space on my drive and all previously deleted file/folders. Lucky for me, this worked and the virus did not pop up when I rebooted my PC.
So my settings are still the same and I have selected disabled for my window server services management in the startup dropdown box . I have not removed it via hijack this or done any of the above mentioned steps.
Shall I provide you with my new HJT log or shall I proceed with the mentioned steps first and then provide you with a new HJT log? Sorry for being a pain! Thanks in advance!

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".


Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

I know this question is not related to this but I now have got Spybot -search & destroy, X cleaner, Ad aware and Superantispyware programs installed on my machine. Should I delete any programs or shall I keep them all? Also I am going to install Mcafee Interent Suite 2007 in a few days as my current subscription is going to run out. Shall I install the whole package (e.g. Firewall, Antispam, etc) or only install the virus only, as currently I have only got the virus scan installed?
On a closing note maybe you might find something from my logs. Please let me know what you find and help me out. Thanks!

How is it running now? Any problems?

SUPERAntiSpyware is a trial version which you can remove after the trial is up or now if you want to .

I'm fine with McAfee and I use it however some people don't like it. I would remove X cleaner and Superantispyware prior to installing McAfee so you have a clean slate to start with. I use Spybot S&D but don't use teatimer and have no problems.

Thanks! It's running fine! I don't know what I really done. lol! My pc start up time in quite slow (takes about 2-3 mins to load fully before I can use it. It takes 30 secs to load from boot to the welcome screen. Seems to pause on this screen and takes a further 20 seconds to go into windows screen) but maybe this is due to my antivirus program and all my other programs which are running in the background. I have been reading about that antivirus programs do slow down your pc. But this a small price to pay rather then having a system infected full of virus and all the other nasties!
When I install Mcafee Security suite 2007 would you recommend me to install the whole suite or just only the antivirus? I installed the whole package before in the past but got tried of clicking allow each time a privacy/anti hack/firewall message came up.
X cleaner is like spybot and sometimes picks up what spybot misses. Plus I have paid for this program for one year so I do not wish to delete it. What about CCleaner? This is a program which clears up any crap left behind when installing programs or after uninstalling programs. Should I delete this this as this has got a registry fix as well. What do you think of this? Delete or keep?

I've never used CCleaner so I can't comment on it or it's effectiveness.

Try all of the McAfee suite and if you don't like a part of it you should be able to remove it.



It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore after removing malware:
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Restart the computer.

To create a new restore point:
  • Start go to All Programs
  • Accessories, System Tools and select System Restore.
  • In the System Restore wizard, select "Create a restore point" and follow the instructions provided.

Please let me know if you need any other logs (e.g. SuperAntispyware, Ad aware, etc.). I will be upgrading to Mcafee Internet Suite 2007 tomorrow. What is the best way to install it? Shall I remove the old Version first from add/remove programs or shall I install it on top of the old version? Thanks!

Log looks fine.

To upgrade McAfee you should remove the old one in add/remove programs and then restart the machine before loading the new one.
