Internet Explorer Errors! Hijack Log Here.
I first posted this in the Windows XP forum and I was advised to come to this forum if disabling of plugins did not solve my problem.

I'm constantly getting dialog boxes popping up, saying "INTERNET EXPLORER HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO SHUT DOWN". No matter if I click either button that says Debug, Send Error Report or Don't Send, I still get shut down, totally disconnected from from the internet.

I also get "iexplore.exe" error messages saying memory could not be written...or some such thing. After that I get shut down.

I have about three antivirus/antispyware programs and the last full scan was Monday 2:00 A.M. There was nothing found. Is the computer clean or not?

Here is my HT log. I don't know if it will help, Please let me know what else I should do. Thanks in advance.

Please print these instructions for reference, as you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from Here or Here.

Note: You will need to run this tool while having an Internet Connection. The tool will download other files while running.
  1. Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  2. The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  3. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional files from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
  4. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  5. Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt).
Please post the C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, While some connection services will require them.

These instructions are basically for home users.

In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Let me know how things are after doing the above.

In TCP/IP, on "Obtain DNS servers (it actually said 'server address' in this spot) automatically" the radio dial was already selected when I got there.

I went ahead and ran cmd, completing all instructions to the end.

So far in the last couple of hours, I have had no unwanted disconnections from the internet and no Error message boxes have popped up. (Good sign, because they had been popping up every few minutes). That's all I have to report at this time. I'm just hoping things are fixed. Many thanks.

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

Combofix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished.

(smile) I'm gonna go ahead and sound like the big wimp that I'm feeling like right now, and say; since my computer seems to be back to working normally (I haven't had a problem for two days since your last suggested fix), if you don't mind I'd like to skip the Combofix steps. I read the tutorial and got paranoid when it got to the part about installing System Recovery and messing around with all that. Also the changing around of settings by the program and the possibilities of this and that happening made me nervous.

That said, would there still be any advantage to my posting a new HijackThis log without running Combofix? Do you feel there are items you still need to look for on the logs? If so, I will post one. Thanks, Cookiegal.

Let's just run a couple of scans.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Please post the results from the SuperAntiSpyware and Panda scans along with a new HijackThis log. But please remove the version of HijackThis you currently have and get the latest one:

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
