Ran combo but nothing happened. It gave me the green bar of opening, then opened a blue command type box then nothing... really weird.
Anyway - what do you think of the above. By the way he is back on the internet - I uninstalled and reinstalled his modem etc.

Hi, Good work....

Usually, ComboFix not running is caused by not turning off protective programs such as antivirus....see my instructions and try again. (I would re-download a new ComboFix also, as something could have gone wrong with the download....) One other problem, is not closing all open programs, windows, etc, in other words, there should be nothing else going on during a scan.

If all the above is done and it still will not run, try it from Windows' Safe Mode....use the F8 key at startup and when you see the black and white list of startup options, use up/down arrow key to point it to Safe Mode and hit the Enter key once, at the logon prompt select the normal user account you use, then when it finishes loading up, run ComboFix from the desktop etc. Full steps are back in my other reply....in Safe Mode, there should be no interference.

UNinstall those older ones in Add/Remove Programs, and download this one, during the install the friend or yourself, will get prompted to update the detection files....get those....and, UNcheck the box with "Use TeaTimer" > next, go through the steps to finish the installation, and Use the Immunize feature of SpyBot, to add the latest detections and protections..... I would run a scan with the new SpyBot, as well.

Hi there,
Not been at work for 2 weeks with holiday. The log still doesnt run, I had totally forgotten to switch off AVG - no brainer. however I have asked him to run spybot, and hijack this log. I had done your instructions but followed them down in order thats why java still showed up as the old one. He has the upto date version now and i will post the logs when he lets me have them.
Things are a bit topsy turvey at the moment with very early and very late shifts at work so we keep missing each other; also my daughter gave birth to twin boys this morning so life is hectic to say the least.
Will get back as soon as possible.

The version of SpyBot is the newest now, that is good, and nothing was found, that's very good.

Yes, please get the version below to him and get a log when you can please....it shows much more of what we need to see. (They had the newest version, it installs as a program, the shortcut should be on the desktop....have them delete and old Hijackthis.exe files ... this is the location of this old version:

C:\Documents and Settings\Darren Dabill\My Documents\Downloads\HijackThis.exe<< delete this old copy! Then they should have the shortcut for the new version right on the desktop...if not, they can download it again here:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

• On that page, select one of the servers in the list under the Free Downloads heading
• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Paste the log in your next reply.
• Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

• Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
• Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
• Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.

Hi, I understand- probably the computer is the last thing on their minds right now. Post a new Hijackthis log from their computer, as soon as they can get the newer Java Update installed. Refer to my previous post with the directions to the Update 6.

*They have Update 5 for Java installed now.

The log itself is fine, but were they ever able to run ComboFix?


I'd like to still see a list of installed software which may show what is preventing ComboFix from working. Usually, it's another program running that causes this problem.


See my reply back in this thread with directions to use Hijackthis to get the list.

I'm not in any rush just post them when you get them.
