Solved: Iexplore.exe using all my CPU capacity
Have had this problem for some 3 or 4 weeks now although have only identified iexplore.exe as a problem recently.

In the beginning the problem was the PC being very slow and problems with Pop ups (for gambling sites mostly) which would open even if I were not using the internet. I thought it might be a virus or something but did repeated scans to no avail and even changed my PC protection. I was using Norton 360 quite happily since about Sept last year. However when I started getting this problem something seemed to go wrong with N360. I found when I used the N360 online support function that the software would do a self test and tell me that "a vital componant is not properly installed". I did some online work with Norton technicians which did not solve anything. Eventually when I got frustrated with them they offered me an link to download a newer version of the problem. Did all that but still no joy. I had been using PC Security Sheild before N360 and have now gone back to them since about 2 weeks ago. This has given some benefit but still had problems with the PC being slow and some pop ups still appearing.

Tried Googling the problem and picked up various results mentioning problems with explorer using vast amounts of CPU space. I researched a bit and picked up on iexplore.exe and related problems with CPU capacity from people using this site. I then looked in my task manager and yes I had iexplore.exe oprn twice (sometimes 3 times) one of which was using 95% + of my CPU.

I also looked to see where I had iexplore.exe on my PC and found that I had about 4 locations only some of which looked correct. I deleted a couple of these as the web research I had done said that sometimes iexplore was being used as a name to hide some malware behind. I now only have iexplore.exe in c:\program files\internet explorer (but also have a iexplore.exe-2D97EBE6 in c:\windows\prefetch and an iexplore.exe.mui in C:\program files\internet explorer\en-US).

Having joined the site I have also invested in some registry cleaning software (4000+errors fixed!!!) and the superantispyware free version. My system is now largely behaving itself with no pop ups etc but ever time I boot up on comes iexplore.exe and everything slows to a crawl till I can persuade it to close down. However I am still worried as the other forums member whose story I followed and whose problem seemed very similar was advised that he had some kind of banking data collector and that the fix would be quite complex.

I have done a hijack this log and append it below. Much appreciate any help on this.

success (I think)
Dear cybertech

many thanks for your help so far and apologies that I have not replied sooner but I have been very busy in the last 2 weeks.

I have run through the different stages of your advice with the following observations;

1 "run HJT again and put a check in the following"

well I did except that certain of the items you had suggested were now not present to put a check against. Not sure if this matters but the ones I couldn't check were the R3 item on your reply (URLSearchHook...) and the O4 item (ending in \Link Axis Bat Wave\city bone.exe). There was a file mentioned against \Link Axis Bat Wave but it was something else.

2 "Download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer"

Did that and the log now follows;

File/Folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Link Access Bat Wave not found.
c:\DOCUME~1\Ali\APPLIC~1\HEARTO~1 moved successfully.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.1 log created on 05062008_084637

3 Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Did this and run as per your instructions. everything seemed to execute properly the log is as follows;

At the end of the process I rebooted my machine before composing this reply. Something does seem to have worked as, for the first time in a while, I did not get iexplore.exe coming up on boot up. Normally I have been seeing iexplore.exe twice in my task manager on boot up with one version using 98% + of my CPU. this was very aggressive yesterday and the process had to be ended about 6 or 7 times before it would go away.

I do want to thank you and I think I will make a donation. I guess I will wait to hear from you as to whether you think this is all ok now. Could you tell me what this problem was? I saw a previous malware log very similar which seemed to be diagnosed as a banking details search tool of some kind. Do you think this was similar or just some nuisance malware

thanks

Please post a new HJT log.

This is commonly installed along with other software. You should always use custom when installing anything just so you can see what other *features* you are going to get.

Windows Live messenger now bundles software too so that may have been where you acquired it.

I spoke to soon!!
Cybertech Hi

am posting a new HJT log below but all is still not well. On this boot up I found iexplore.exe open twice in my task manager window with I think associated high CPU usage.

Also while running Superantispyware I had a message from my PC protection software (PC Security Shield) that some part of it need to close. The program icon disappeared from the bottom right corner of my monitor although I opened the main program screen and it seemed to be still running.

I also had the following message from the PCSS software;
"F-secure Anti Virus.
Malicious code found in file c:\system volume information\_restore{D207F513-1AD2-4EA6-B9AE-1EC20364A2B0}\RP539\A0181063.exe
Infection: Trojan downloader.win32.zlob.grw
Action: Failed"

Again thanks for your help. alloutofgas.

You still have LOP so please do this and then when it's clean I'll have you flush your system restore which will take care of the other problem.

Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  4. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  5. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  6. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  7. Save that notepad file
If the log is too large to post, use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

Start OTScanIt. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

Code:
[Kill Explorer]
[Unregister Dlls]
[Registry - Non-Microsoft Only]
< Run [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

< Run [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\] > -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
YY -> darthold -> %AppData%\Heart One Scr\Mapiboldsect.exe [C:\DOCUME~1\Tim\APPLIC~1\HEARTO~1\Mapiboldsect.exe]

NY -> 1 C:\*.tmp files -> C:\*.tmp
NY -> 1 C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp
NY -> 4 C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\*.tmp

NY -> 22 C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp files -> C:\Documents and Settings\Tim\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp
[Empty Temp Folders]
[Start Explorer]
[Reboot]

The fix should only take a very short time.
When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished.
CLick the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.
Post that information back here along with a new OTScanIt scan.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

Download Avenger2 by swandog46

  • Click the above link & save to your desktop.
  • Right click on the Avenger.zip folder and select "Extract to Avenger
    You will now have an Avenger folder on your desktop.
  • Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Ctrl+C

    Code:
    Files to delete:
    %allusersprofile%\application data\link axis bat wave\2 meow.exe
    %appdata%\heart one scr\mapiboldsect.exe
    %systemroot%\tasks\a1ecf52f918b710b.job
    %systemroot%\tasks\b12ecb9c91857b44.job
    d:\autorun.inf

    Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

  • Open the Avenger folder & doubleclick the Avenger.exe file
  • Right click on the window under Input script here:, and select Paste
  • make sure the Scan for rootkits is checked & the Automatically disable any rootkits found is NOT checked ...
  • Click on Execute
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:
It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Delete" or "Drivers to Disable", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply with a new hijackthis log.
