Question Lots of used up hard drive space
Something weird going on with my computer...

I turned my computer on tonight and found it running VERY sluggish. I took a look at the properties on my C: drive and found that out of about 50 GB, I only had about 4 GB of free space. Other than hooking up an external DVD-RW drive and installing the accompanying software, I haven't done any serious downloading (other than one song via iTunes). I remember checking the C: properties last week sometime and was using up only about a third of HD space. I did a system restore to the beginning of the month, but the HD space is the same...guess I was barking up the wrong tree! I looked under Add/Remove programs, but didn't find anything suspicious-looking. I'm posting my Hijackthis log. Hopefully someone can help me out...

Thank you.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications (the fifth one in the list)..
  • Click the "Download" button to the right. A new page will open.
  • Select your platform and check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click Continue.
  • Click on the link under Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
  • Go to Start - Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy the entire report and paste it in your next reply with a new Hijackthis log.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thank you for your help. Here are the log files.

P.S. I was browsing another thread and realized I used an older version of HJT for both logs. Should I repost with a log from the new version?

Looks fine. You can post a new log with the current version of HJT.

Are you having any problems now?

The C: drive is still maxed out. It's still running slow, but seems a tad better than before. Out of 50GB, 47GB is used up. I downloaded the new version of HJT. Here is the log file:

Download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTScanIt, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  4. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  5. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  6. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  7. Save that notepad file

Please post the resulting log here as an attachment.
  • Click on the Reply button
  • scroll down to Manage Attachments
  • Click in the box that says Upload File from your Computer
  • Click the Browse... button and find the file then click open
  • Click the Upload button
  • Wait until you see Current Attachment and your file name
  • Click on Close this window
  • Then submit the reply.

Start OTScanIt. Copy/Paste the information in the Code box below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

Code:
[Kill Explorer]
[Unregister Dlls]
[Files/Folders - Modified Within 30 days]
NY -> 5 C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp files -> C:\WINDOWS\System32\*.tmp
NY -> sdxpqcsy.dll -> C:\Documents and Settings\Barbara\Local Settings\Temp\sdxpqcsy.dll
NY -> 3 C:\Documents and Settings\Barbara\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp files -> C:\Documents and Settings\Barbara\Local Settings\Temp\*.tmp
[Extra Files]
Purity
[Empty Temp Folders]
[Start Explorer]
[Reboot]

The fix should only take a very short time.
When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished.
CLick the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.
Post that information back here along with a new OTScanIt scan.

I will review the information when it comes back in.

Have you added any new hardware lately?

I notice from your OTScan log your Hiberfil.sys file is pretty big. You might want to turn that off and see how much of your hard drive space you recover. http://windowsitpro.com/article/arti...lsys-file.html

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that scan.

A few weeks ago, I installed a new LG external recordable DVD drive and the software that came with it.

I cleared the Hiberfil file. If I remember correctly, it deleted about 500 MB. I also downloaded ComboFix. Attached is the log.

Your OTScan log showed some anomalies which I have consulted with one of our Admins about, CookieGal. She in turn has contacted the developer, Old Timer, and I still look forward to some information regarding that.

Since ComboFix did remove some items I would like to see a new OTScanIt log.

I ran another OTScanIt for files created within 90 days and checked the box to scan all users. Did I somehow download some type of malware that's clogging up my drive space?

Another thing I completely forgot to mention...my laptop is hooked up to a wireless router. Once in a while, I get a message from my TrendMicro Anti-virus that "unknown users" are connected to my network and it lists the IP addresses. The two IPs that are detected are always the same and are very similar, so I figure it's one of my neighbors with a wireless router and always click on the "do not trust" button. Could this have anything to do with the problem I'm having?
