Urgent! Infected computer, but no clue how to fix it
my internet keeps randomly closing down (i use firefox), my word documents don't save, everytime i attempt to print something the box comes up saying "catastrophic failure" and my whole computer shuts down.
i have no idea what's wrong with my computer but i know SOMETHING is fishy.
i have a Windows XP 2000 (professional edition). SP2

any help at all would be greatly appreciated

A belated hello pk89,

I'll need to see what all is loaded there first, to check what might be the issue involved. If you still have not resolved the problem, go ahead and download HijackThis from Here. Then click on the downloaded file to install HijackThis. After it is installed open HijackThis and select Do a system scan and save logfile. Use copy/paste and post that log back here for review.

Also Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your protective software queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here. Here are guidelines for using Silent Runners. You can use separate posts here when replying and posting the log files if needed.

Nothing too nefarious showing in those views. A Tunebite start that appears to be only a remnant now, this run once installer for what may be a Canon software install (should go away next reboot):

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [InstallShieldSetup] C:\PROGRA~1\INSTAL~1\{8A508~1\mpmaster.exe -rebootC:\PROGRA~1\INSTAL~1\{8A508~1\reboot.ini -l0x9

And another remnant from MySearch, which is likely the pre-installed version there of MyWebSearch. I see what is normally an indication you are getting Windows authenticity balloon notices - have you been getting some Windows popups?

Also a Korean Gom Player you installed at some point, but only the MySearch as an undesirable so far.

Assuming Tunebite is now uninstalled, close Internet Explorer and all running programs and run a scan in HijackThis. Place a check next to all of the following lines, then select “Fix Checked” and close HijackThis.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tunebite] C:\Program Files\RapidSolution\Tunebite\Tunebite.exe -tray

------------------------------------------

Then open and update SUPERAntiSpyware, but don't scan just yet.

Also Go Here and download ATF cleaner. Click on the downloaded file to run it, and select "Select All", then click Empty Selected (and close ATF).

If you have them, also click on Firefox/Opera at the top and repeat the steps (and close ATF). Firefox/Opera will need to be closed first for the cleaning to be effective.

On Windows Vista that "Windows Temp" is disabled, to empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator"

===============================================

Reboot into Safe Mode (at startup tap the F8 key and select Safe Mode).

Open SUPERAntiSpyware and click the Scan your Computer button. You may need to start SUPERAntiSpyware, then right click the Taskbar icon (the little bug shaped icon) and select "Scan for Spyware, Adware, Malware..." to access the scan panel. Making sure that Fixed Drive (NTFS) is checked (typically the C Drive), check "Perform Complete Scan", then click Next. SUPERAntiSpyware will now complete a system scan.

SUPERAntiSpyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found. Make sure that they all have a check next to them and click next. If prompted allow the reboot (or manually reboot at this time), and after the reboot open SUPERAntiSpyware again (double click the bug-shaped Taskbar icon).

Click Preferences, then under the Statistics/Logs tab, click to select the most recent Scan Log, then click View Log. Save the log to your desktop, and copy/paste the text from the log back here.

Post that log back here along with a new Hijackthis log please.

What is tunebite and mysearch?
and yes, i've been getting windows popups. a Symantec pop-up keeps appearing saying that my "virus protection is out of date. Open your Norton product to resolve these issues." and 656106464 of these pop-ups keep appearing on my screen.
and when i start my computer, after i choose which account to log onto, it says that my windows isn't genuine.

Must have been installed by someone there at some past point, but a copy/paste from web search info:

Quote:
Tunebite ...legally converts DRM copy-protected music, audio books, video clips like WMA, AAC, M4P, M4B, WMV and M4V into unprotected MP3, OGG, WMA, ...
And as I mentioned only a startup remnant now. MyWebsearch gets pre-installed by computer manufacturers to make extra money, I assume.

As for Norton, if it is set to automatically update and is blocked from doing that, you will likely get repeated requests or notices saying it needs that. Might be that Spyware Doctor is interfering with that - how long have you had both of these installed on the system so far?

The Windows authenticity popups are of course a concern. When did you get this computer and of course from where, and who installed the copy of XP here? When did these alerts start showing there?

i first downloaded spyware doctor about 2 years ago, then someone told me that THAT program brings in viruses, so i deleted it. Then i heard that that statement was false and re-downloaded it a couple months later, and i've had it ever since.

as for the computer... i received this from my aunt approx 4 1/2 years ago. she works with computers so i assume that she installed it... but she got it from someone else so i'm not exactly sure who the original owner was or who installed it.

the alerts started showing back in august of 2007
