PLEASE HELP! Virus is eating my computer
I have a Dell Dimension XPS T600r, 30GB. A few days ago it started running slower and slower. I used ATF cleaner in Main mode. It took longer than usual but did its thing. I then did the same in Firefox mode. I moved onto McAfee to run a Quick Scan for anything missed before moving on to a complete scan with McAfee the Super Anti Spyware free addition, but was unable to finish the Quick Scan and never got the chance to run a complete scan with the above programs. I thought the problem may have been in my guest sign in so I ran ATF. When I tried to run a Quick Scan with McAfee in stalled out on Outlook express...The last item left on the screen was something I did not recognize URL removed by Cookiegal All the while my computer began running slower and slower. Finaly it would not load anything. Control, Alt Delete showed alot of stuff running but I am ashamed to say I would not recognize any but the most obvious threats. I am only able to use this computer in safe mode as it stands. I have Spyware Blaster and ThreatFire, HJT and SDfix in the old arsenal
and still cant figure out how to verify my McAfee fire wall is up and running as windows can not see it! This may be a much simpler problem to fix than I fear and the addition of Threatfire a month ago may have something to do with it?I would be greatful for any help anyone could supply and am including a HJT Log here.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Have you tried doing a system restore to before this started happening?

Please remove the older version of HijackThis you have and post a log from the newest version.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.

I apologize, the HTJ log you requested included!
I was unexpectedly away on work for the week, just returned.

I did a System Restore per your suggestion. Still running slow, getting extra McAfee icon
at bottom of screen says my computer is not protected, seems to be virus scan related.
fire wall must still be up as windows says I am protected while windows firewall shows as off.
Removed old version of HTJ via Revo Uninstaller and downloaded new version pasted below.

This is the first time I have used the computer in normal mode.I've been in safe mode w/
networking untill now.
Noticed that when I hit ctrl, alt, delete last, there seemed to be a lot going on, I am not opposed to sharing any of said info if it will help you get me up and working.
I apologize again for the lag in my reply time and THANK YOU for anything you can show me to fix this problem as well as your recommendations for keeping me out of this mess in the future.

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix:

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished.

Combo fix and new HTJ logs as requested.
I went through the process you suggested and am posting both a ComboFix and "new" HJT
logs. My computer seems to be running much better already and I am planning on removing half of the programs on the start up menu to save time when I sign on, I can always run them when needed. I will check back to find out if there are anymore fixes you can hep me to.
Thanks.

The ComboFix log is fine.

Please do this on-line scan: Kaspersky Online Scanner

Before scanning, please be sure to:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all anti-virus or anti-spyware programs.
Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database. Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only want to see a report and I will advise you on the findings.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

The link provided will not work, it just times out. Tried to goto www.kaspersky.com and had the same problem. Shall I download Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner from Cnet Downloads or would you rather I do something else?

There may be something in your hosts file blocking it so let's try this:

Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
  • Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click on "File Handling".
  • Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
  • Click OK on the Confirmation box.
  • Click on "Make Read Only?"
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

It's probably because you don't have Java installed as this scan needs Java so please do this:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications (the fifth one in the list).
  • Click the "Download" button to the right. A new page will open.
  • Select your platform and check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click Continue.
  • Click on the link under Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Then try to run the scan again please.

Had a thought, signed out and shut computer down, then turned it back on, signed on
and tried kaspersky again. Still no luck, but when I went to shut down I got a message
that Outlook.exe was still running, didnt know if I should end task so I let it do it's thing
and shut down. While I have them both I dont use Outlook or Office and with only 5 +
GB left they could both drop dead for all I care. Just thought it was weird that I should get this message.

Well it took some doing but here is the Panda scan. Please note that the McAfee problems listed are because I had everything turned so as not to interfere with the scan, per your suggestion.Im sure you already know this, any way...

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log please.
