Solved: BHO's Trojans and Adware shut down internet access
Hi,
I'm running XP Home with the latest updates (to last week).
I'm also running WinPatrol, Spyware Blaster, Spybot, Filseclab Personal Firewall,
AVG Free 8.0, and Arovax Shield. My wireless router has all the ports set to stealth.

All my antivirus programs were either active or set to alarm on the weekend, and I no longer have internet access at home.

Also, now my AVG Free no longer registers that it is alarmed because there is no internet access for updates; it just says every function is working fine.

Spyware Blaster had 18,000 + "warnings" after I installed the 8.0 version, but I've "healed" all of them now, and there are no warnings, although I don't believe the program, but I know it is has been hijacked by the trojans, or adware, or BHO's. There were 190 Internet Explorer items which would be disabled every time I turned on the Spyware Blaster, but now they don't show as being disabled, but I don't believe that either.

Last week, once when I reactivated the items which had had their protection disabled, Arovax Shield registered 21 attempts to modify the hosts file in less than 2 minutes.

It seems that all the good protection I set up has just made the viruses, et al has just made them harder to find and eradicate when I do get them. (Sigh.)

I hope to hear from you soon.

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
