Hijack this log - this can't be good
A "friend" (who is in the dog house with me after this) suggested I watch my TV show via a website. Well, several clicks into it my computer goes nutso. Anitivirus stuff popping up everywhere and making it VERY difficult to even get to this page to post this. I've never seen a/my computer do this. I'm scared! I hope this can be fixed. It was giving me messages that it was taking over my computer and stealing my passwords and other scary things. I want to attach 2 screenshots to give a sample of what is popping up but it isn't letting me...I'm SO sorry I got myself into this mess. I won't watch TV online anymore!

An antivirus software (that I do not believe I installed) pops up messages. The most recent one says:
Quote:
Trojan.Mdropper.AC is a Trojan horse that may exploit the
Microsoft Excel Unspecified Remote Code Execution
Vulnerability (BID 33870). It may also attempt to download
files on the compromised computer.
Other messages talk about stealing my passwords and what not.

If my log is "clear" can someone please tell me that? Should I run another program and post a report (SpyBot?) or something?

Thank you in advance

Oh, and here are the screen shots. The red one happens every time I load a new page.

Bump? Please... my computer is moving slower than dial-up speed.

1) it makes popping sounds in the background like a program is blocking pop ups, doing it does it every 2-3 minutes.

2) It has taken me 25 minutes from opening the browser to posting this.

3) The "Personal Anti-Virus" software pops up and I don't think I downloaded that one. If I did, I don't remember and it must have been from a long time ago. It has been giving me error messages in the bottom right corner of the screen. I wrote down the last three:
-pav.exe
- w32ackantta.b@mm (Didn't write down everything from this one.
-trojan/mdropper.ac (Trojan.Mdropper.AC is a Trojan horse that may exploit the Microsoft Excel Unspecfied Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (BID 33870). It may also attempt to download files on to the compromised computer.)

Hi Kara9080 and Welcome to TSG!

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also, I would like you to generate a "Add/Remove Software list" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

* HijackThis Uninstall List
* HijackThis log (new)

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate link 1 alternate link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
  • Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
    • Close browsers before scanning
    • Scan for tracking cookies

One snafu, when I rebooted my computer it locked up. I had to hold in the power button to make it shut down, then brought it back up. Connected to this issue?

Other than that, I'm having no symptoms! *happy, happy*

Hi Kara9080....

One snafu, when I rebooted my computer it locked up. I had to hold in the power button to make it shut down, then brought it back up. Connected to this issue?
This routine maintenance should take care of this at the end of my post.

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.
How to Create a Restore Point.
How to use Cleanmgr.

======================================

Here is some useful information on keeping your computer clean:
  1. Most important thing is to make sure Windows is kept up to date with the latest patches and updates from Windows Update.
  2. Here are two great Preventive programs
:
  1. SpywareBlaster protects you from malicious ActiveX controls and cookies. Make sure and check for updates twice a month.
  2. Surf Safe with McAfee's SiteAdisor. SiteAdisor will work with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. SiteAdisor is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. SiteAdvisor uses the following color codes to indicate the safety level of each site.
  1. Red for Warning
  2. Yellow for Use Caution
  3. Green for Safe
  4. Grey for Unknown

Here are the link to install SiteAdisor in Internet Explorer and Firefox

Here are some additional links for you to check out to help you with your computer security.

How did I get infected in the first place.

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guid...rag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

And let me know how are things now?
