Angry IE, FireFox not working - AVG won't run!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Specs:
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

Problem:
When I double-click on IE, it opens and then says "Your last browsing session closed unexpectedly. Would you like to restore your last session, or go to your home page?"
And then it closes. Firefox doesn't even open, and the program that closes in the task manager closes so fast that I can't see the name.
I downloaded the HiJackThis, but after running it once it closed. I double-clicked on it and it said "Cannot find the specified device, path or file."

Google chrome still works--I guess that virus or whatever's causing the issue is too old to recognize Chrome as a browser.

I tried AVG free, but it won't even run a virus scan.
