Unhappy Windows Police Pro Removal
OK, so, my friend fell for Windows Police Pro (a scareware for anyone who's unfamiliar) and now I'm trying to fix it for her.

I found some guides on other websites and I removed everything that they said but still I get the pop ups from it when using certain websites (like google) and Firefox still won't open (it used to "block" it becaues it was "infected"). I finally got ad-aware running (it was "infected" too) and that removed some MORE of the virus/malware/whatever it's called.
I still have a VERY hard time getting the computer even RUNNING on the internet so I'm trying to figure out what to go and where to do before I go to download anything.

The computer is equipped with AVG and Ad-Aware, both have been run a couple times and no longer find anything.

The computer is Windows XP Media edition... something like that =/
Web browsers installed are IE8 and a very new version of FireFox, I barely got my friend to download it a week or so ago.

Any other requested information and I will be glad to post. I'm going to try to download hi-jack this on that computer and HOPEFULLY post a log on here from that computer. I don't dare stick my flash drive into that computer

This malware exceeds my limited tech skills. I hope someone can help us! I now wish I'd kept a log of everything I'd done

OK so I just tried to run AVG again and it had some kind of error and said reinstalling might work. I tried to reinstall and it had 783 warnings occur. They were all things that failed

I feel like everything I have done only made things worse.

One thing I forgot to mention is that on bootup it has some error with an application that I lookd up and has something to do with quickbooks, it is missing a DLL file or something... next time it comes up I'll probably post it. I probably nukified it along with other things.

The computer is failing to initiate anything, including task manager.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The message it gives on bootup is

qbdagent2002.exe - Unable to Locate Component

This application has failed to start because msjava.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

That started occurring after I deleted a ton of things that I thought were part of windows police pro.

I started another AVG scan and its finding more crap =( I haven't gone anywhere yet! How is it finding more stuff?

This is so much worse than anything I've ever tried to clean up before!

------------------------------

So, I used the Add & remove programs function to remove some unnecessary programs and to un-install ad-aware because it appeared to have been corrupted and I intended to re-install it from a CD I was going to burn from MY computer. Just after un-installing ad-aware the computer downloaded windows updates. I hope these are legitimate because now it's installing them 3 of 19 ... Anyway... I'm going to put install files for IE 8, AVG, Ad-Aware, Hijack this, and anything else I can think of on a cd to install onto that computer. It's running better but still very slow whenever IE is open. It still needs lots of help from someone who knows what they are doing!

for some reason i can't figure out how to edit my message again. I try to run hijack this and it tells me it's already running. What do I do now? Everything I've done this computer is now running better than my personal computer but it has error messages and things that pop up randomly. It tells me that some foreign program has changed my default search provider from BING to GOOGLE every time i open IE and that it's "FIXING" it for me and it puts it back to BING as default. I left it as default after the first couple times but I still get that stupid message. Does anyone know a way I can repair quickbooks installation without the cds? I don't know if this computer came with it pre-installed or what but I know it's corrupted or missinga file now.

Is this thread even in the right forum? I fully intended to post a hijack this log but I haven't been able to yet. I'm probably not going to get any sort of help without one, huh?
