Maybe still infected???
Help please,

Recently, my laptop (HP Pavilion Windows XP) became infected. I ran Hijackthis (see results below) and Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes got rid of the infection and after a few scans nothing shows up with Malwarebytes. I did run LSPfix to repair the connection problem that resulted from the bug. The laptop functions normal; however, this is what show up in the wbemess file at different intervals (see below); it started on the day the laptop got infected. Does anybody know what it is and should I be concerned about it?
How do I fix it if need be? Is the laptop still infected?

I also ran ATF Cleaner and CCleaner.

Anybody,

This is what appeared in the wmiprov log today:

(Sat Oct 31 06:54:10 2009.297562) : WDM call returned error: 4200

I do not know what is going on with wmiprov and wbemess. Could someone reply?

Please update your version of HJT.
Click here to download HJTInstall.exe
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.

Avast! is currently running. Below is an updated Hijackthis.

Also, the computer will not restore to any past restore dates. I've tried several RS points in both Normal & Safe Modes. The RS goes thur the proccess completely with no hang ups or errors; however, the same message appears after each reboot;

"Incomplete Restoration"

Your machine does not look infected.

I have no idea why your restore points are not working or got removed.


Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 17.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: " I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u17 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version. (Vista users, right click on the jre-6u17windows-i586.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Thanks cybetech.

I am updating Java as I write this reply.

A thought, I do use CCleaner daily with checks in Windows Tab sections: Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer and System only, (no checks in Advanced section). Delete Index.dat files is also checked to clean.

Any chance of CCleaner having any impact to System Restore problem or the mysterious wbemess log issue?

Any members have any thoughts?

In removing older versions of Java, do I delete Java(TM) 6 update 3 contained in ADD or Remove Programs, keep it or delete it???

What Java to I keep as there still remains Java Control Panel in the Control Panel folder. Do I delete that as well before I download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 17?

Don't worry about what is in the Control Panel.

Yes, I 've tried different restore point days last month (Oct 13, 15, 17, 21, 24, etc.).

I think one or more of the restore points must be corrupt.
It seems best, at this point in time, to clear all the old restore points and start with new one.
