Pages load slow
Hi,
I have been having alot of trouble with webpages taking forever to load. drives me nuts.
I dont remember how to get into what starts up when I boot my computer so I can turn things off. I am thinking this is the problem. I have XP, Cable connection, pretty old computer,
at least 5 years old. I really dont want to buy a new one, but dont know how much more of this I can take. any suggestions?
thanks.

Sounds like a virus, hard drive problem or just a case of old computer.

To access startup items, click start then Run..., type in msconifg and hit enter.

I would strongly suggest to run a utility called combofix. Find it on google, gets rid of hefty virus really fast.

Also run a CHKDSK on your HD, do this by going to My computer, right click on your hard drive (Usually C: drive), go to properties, click the Tools tabs. Click Check now, check both options and it will ask your if you want to do this on restart. Hit yes and restart your computer, this will help a cluttered hard drive run more smooth.

Sorry to take issue here but (a) the correct sytax is msconfig and (b) it's a tad risky recommending ComboFix to a poster with little experience. In my opinion, it's safer to recommend CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com to de-clutter and MalwareBytes from http://www.malwarebytes.com to sniff out the malware.

How much experience do you need to double click an executable with no install.....

Anyways since this guy knows everything take his advice.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

What's listed for the processor type and speed and the amount of RAM?

Double-click MY COMPUTER, right-click the C drive icon, then click Properties.

What's listed for the hard drive size and the amount of free space?

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

How many entries have a checkmark?

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete at the same time to open Windows Task Manager, then click Processes(tab).

How many running processes are there?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am going to try all of them and see if it helps.
I will let ya know if it does. So you think combofix would be to advanced for me?
I do know my way around a computer some.

also, I have AMD processor, and it says
1.4 GHz, 496 MB ram
I have 2 drives, on my C i have 26 GB of free space, and on my E drive I have 59 GB of free space.
19 things are checked marked in my start up, probably some I dont need. I only unchecked the things I knew would be ok to uncheck.
Its showing 55 processes running. I do have a 2 browsers open right now, and my computer. what the heck else could be in there running?
thanks again.

ComboFix is a lot more than clicking on an executable file. In my view, there are steps that can be taken to peel layers of malware down bit by bit rather than pitching in with sufch a powerful tool at the outset. You'll benefit greatly from a memory upgrade and on fact with a fairly small processor and low memory, you may not have malware problems at all. Take the online memory scan at http://www.crucial.com and see what you can upgrade to and how much it would cost.

Its showing I have an empty slot for more memory. do you think it is worth investing
in more memory? would this help pages load faster? I also ran the malware and it did find some viruses on my computer.

karebear:

I have to concur with Saga Lout about using ComboFix. Don't use it without the assistance and guidance of a yellow shield malware expert.

Adding another 512 MB of RAM is definitely a good idea.

19 checked startup items and 55 running processes is too many. That startup load can definitely use some trimming down.

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2. Close all open windows, then install it. Run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less. Save the resulting log in Notepad. Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

Before you disappear to the other Forum, Karebear, I say a big yes to that memory upgrade - it will make a huge difference to add another 512Mb.

I also can't help noticing yet another HJT log showing an infected system supposedly guarded by Norton. Incredible!

This log entry is definitely a problem:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [73257811466259418521132921121980] C:\Program Files\Antivirus 2009\av2009.exe

It's associated with a rogue security program.
