getting rid of spyware I just ran ADAWARE (which I occasionally use) and found 81 added components. Usually there are 3-4 (mainly doubleclick) but one other time there were an unusually large number, including GATOR and OFFER COMPANION (which I'm continually on the lookout for).
Different people use my computer, my 14 year old grandson downloads games, etc. when he visits and then I take them out.
Anyway, ADAWARE always has taken them out, but this time it left one, saying it couldn't delete it. DOWNLOADWARE. I also wrote down some of the names (that were taken out) BrilliantDigital was one. I looked in ADD/REMOVE programs and found a few "unknowns", I looked them up in google and found they were "added" programs. So I took them out. News.netDomain4.50, FirstlookPortal, MelfinMedia Viewer.
I found several websites with directions on how to take out downloadware, but it seemed confusing and both versions were different.
I was reading in this thread about Zone Alarm, which has a free version, but when I looked at it, it recommended cleaning the system first (of trojans, which I think downloadware is) and this product cost $19.95. Not to be cheap where my computer's health is concerned, but I don't HAVE $19.95.
I would rather learn how to go in (the registery or program files?) and find it myself.
I put it in FIND but nothing came up for it but 3 shortcuts/word documents I put in today ABOUT it.
I thought ADAWARE would find and take out anything. I do have the free version, and I think the latest one.
Thanks,
