    And here's a question for Saga Lout..............as you suggested, I was able to copy all of my "Works" documents to a flash and then over to a working computer. However I was not able to to so with the emails. I was able to locate them, but when attempting to copy them to a flash I get the following notice: "Error copying file or folder. Cannot copy file. Cannot read from source file or disk." Re: Openoffice, I had already downloaded it to this XP computer, but when attempting to open it, I get the same type notice as I do with attempting opening Works. soffice.bin - bad image. The application or DLL C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org3\program\i 18nisolang 1MSC.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check against your installation disk. I do have a DVD that came with the computer entitled Microsoft Software Jukebox with the notation saying "This DVD also includes Microsoft Works & Monet 2004. When I insert it into the DVD player, I cannot locate Works on the DVD.

    it seems that the author somehow removed our reply on my problem.
    My computer was running fine, just like it should be, but then all of a sudden (while playing Call of Duty), it crashed seriously, sound not just lagging, but even kind of totally ruined, game stuck, pc stuck, everything malfunctioning. i rebooted right away, which got the BSOD on my screen. after trying repairs with tuneup utilities, it totally crashed and turned to a black SOD. i'm not sure if it's rlly because of the update...but i just need to get the data off my hard disk .
    maybe some helpful info: i had a look which options i could have with the restore CD. It turned out that it can't locate my C drive, which isn't comforting at all. srry for posting this in a visitor message

    Your answer helped greatly in guiding me to my next question. How do i edit the boot.ini and remove the safeboot option. The infected hard drive is still connected as a slave on my "good computer", so could you explain in detail how to preform this task, i am inexperienced in the world of computer repair.

    The file boot.ini is in the root of your C:\ drive, Jim and as it;s a text file, of type .txt, Notepad will open it when you double click it. Just remove the entry relating to /safeboot and the remainder will look something like this one, taken from one of my systems.

    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN

    You need to untick the "Hide Protected System files and folders" in Control Panel>Folder Options>View menu, as well as ticking to "Show all files and folders".

    It might seem selfish of me, but I'd appreciate having someone to ask for help when I come up against something beyond my capabilities (that's just about anything)
