I am going through the same problem you had. I have the GeForce 6400 in an HP Pavillion computer, and it recently started displaying 10 groups of 4 vertical blue lines on the bios and boot screens. I was able to boot in safe mode and disable the nVidia drivers and then I could boot using the default VGA drivers.

After several of hours with HP tech support, they convinced me to run the Windows recovery, which wiped my hard drive and tried to reinstall Vista. Now, I can't boot the computer at all. I still get the vertical lines, but the screen goes blank after the boot screen. Ugh.
