What computer should I buy?
Hi, I'm looking to purchase a new laptop computer. I want the computer with the most amount of memory... I want it to be very fast...
My needs are primarily for photo and video editing, photo and video storage, web browsing, and multi-tasking. (I normally have 5 or 6 internet exporer windows open at once, Photoshop, AOL, and a few folders)
Based on my needs, I am looking into some of the gaming computers, even though I'm not a gamer, because they seem to have a lot of memory, and are very fast.
Please do not tell me to build my own, because I have a small infant, and cannot see myself taking the time to do this.
The computers I'm looking into are...
alienware area-51 m15x (everything I want, but I heard their service is TERRIBLE. I can't have this, as I'm not very computer savvy and if something goes wrong, I need help)
dell m1730 (Great, but the most expensive by far)
gateway p-171XL FX edition (Cheaper, but not as many goodies
Toshiba satellite p200/205 (cheapest, not as much memory. )

Any suggestions or feedback would be great. I'm open to other computers if you have other ones you think will fit my needs, but overall, i want the FASTEST computer, with the most memory.

Thanks!!!

I wouldn't recommend Dell even if you were just looking for Wal-Mart quality junk, but to each his own.

IMHO, Asus laptops are the best, bar-none. The manufacturer's warranty is two full years of rock-solid 7-day-turn-around-time goodness. They build them with good parts; I buy their notebooks and mainboards exclusively and have never had a problem.

It's been my observation that when domeone declares something "Junk" with no explanation or rationale, they do not know what they are talking about. . .

Asus does make some nice laptops . . I quit using their motherboards because of high failure rates and poor support

Dell builds their Inspiron-series and some Latitude-series laptops with inexpensive Hitachi hard drives, which the manufacturer declares to have a 2.5 year life expectancy at best, and it shows. I've replaced more hard drives in Inspirons than any other brand of laptop. The Dell-rebranded Infineon RAM used in everything but the XPS line of laptops - which is also used in Sony VAIO machines with equal disappointment - is about as reliable as a wood chip with a logic gate superglued to it.

And don't get me started on Dells track record of notebook chassis heat management, or the pathetic excuse for a soldering job on the DC jack in pretty much every Dell notebook every made. (Okay, with the exception of the square plug harness concept they had going on, which you can still find in the occasional model.)

Please don't accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about. If you are ever leery of someone's level of experience you need only look up their posting history.

A much better post than your first one . . . not that I agree, but at least you stated your case.

Good job

Uh oh...
Now I'm scared. I didn't get this post until AFTER i placed my order.

I settled on the most expensive one....... It totaled up to close to $5,000. I got the XPS M1730.

Am I going to get screwed in the end or do you think I'll be okay?

I just want a superfast computer that can handle multi tasking, and has lots of storage.

BTW... I am not a very advanced user. Currently I work off of a Toshiba satellite. It's okay, but i filled up the storage quickly, and it is getting veryyyyyyyyyyy slow.

So what's the consensus?

You'll be fine . . most of the negatives above are behind them . . I have around a hundred Dell laptops in the client base and have fewer problems with them than other brands.

You may have overbought for your stated uses, but it shoud be fine.

They don't sell more laptops than onyone else for no reason!

XPS series laptops pass inspection in my book. It's the Inspirons - which are what most people buy - you have to avoid.

And I hate to be insanely nitpicky, but HP is the leader in PC sales... Dell sales declined in Q4 of last year.

Well, he did say they sell more laptops than anyone else, not that they were the leader in PC sales.
