Blu-Ray need help!

I am looking to buy a nice blu-ray player but am not sure what is a good one...i heard that previous blu-ray players were unable to update their firmware therefore making them obsolete when the new version came out. The only one that was exempt from this was the PS3 which could update...i was just wondering if the newer models can update the firmware as newer ones come out? If so what re some good ones?

willing to spend close to a $1000 if needed.
