I just wonder if LCD TV's also make a difference, what receiver one has. For example, in the Store this same TV with a blueray disk showing was very clear. Pictures from the USB stick that can be viewd on LG (USB port) are very sharp.
So one has to consider everything.
the lg has the abilty to have a good picture

use componet cables or hdmi anything else is a waste

turn off the all auto pictures controls
do not use cool or warm picture settings

washout is the result of brightness being to high,
find a program that has the black bars going either on the top and bottom or the sides
reduce brightness until these bars are true and black
the best way is to reduce brighness all the way down and then start turning up when the black begins to come out of black then stop and reduce brighness slightly
turn down color all the way
go to contrast level
most tvs either default this to 50 or 100
the ones that are set to 100 by default usually benifit by being reduce slightly by a few points if you are not seeing differant shades of white during bright scenes
and the one with default of 50 generaly need to be turned up so the whites are pure white like they should be.

you should have a great black and white picture now .
And as always color adjustment is last

start turning up the color until the faces look natural

people often turn up the color to high
what this does is makes the deep shades of color look like the same color.
example the amercian flag with the color up to high you cant see the wrinkles and what have you.

when adjusting unit do not worry about how far your settings are from default.
Differant manufactures like for the tv to be set a a little hot on the showroom floor,
If not then they will look dim or low on color because the next tv is set a little hot.

Use your backlight adjustment when you are done to compensate for your room brighness.

brett, I printed out your advise and will doublecheck all settings, it makes a lot of sense
Unfortunately where I live I have no other choice, antenna or satelite
We can't get Dishnetwork here
