Red face Damsel in distress - HDTV problem
Hi guys, i recently purchased a 19'' lcd tv and monitor, with 1440 x 900 resolution. It has the following input/ outputs:
RF Connection: 1x Antenna (Analog tuner)
Input Connection: 1x VGA (15 pin PC monitor plug)
Input Connection: 1x 3.5m Pc Audio Input
Input Connection: 1x AV (red, white & yellow cable)
Output Connection: 1x S-video
Output Connection: 1x Audio out 3.5mm
Unbelieveably, it does not have component connections.

I also hace a HD set top box which has:

S-video
component
AV (red, white & yellow cable)
optical
dv out
RS 232 (9 pin) connection to pc

Is it possible to obtain 1080i, or even 720p if I am only limited to the AV, or s-video cables? Can I somehow connect with a cable that has 9 pin (at set top box) and 15 pin (at TV), if theres is such a thing. Or am I just going to be stuck with 576i or 576p? Is either, or both even HD at all?
As you can see, I am really in a pickle, and would appreciate any help at all.

thanks,
Cathy

576i and 576p are HD resolutions but if your want 720p or 1080i it looks like you would need a new TV, or a video scaler (go with a new tv), you are going to need at least a component input and HDMI will be better. Will your receiver box do resolution higher than 720p? Some of the newer ones probably will, DirecTV advertises 1080p but I haven't seen any info from Comcast or Verizon so they might still be no better than 720p

Thanks for the reply, yes my set tio box does up to 1080i. What about the hdmi to vga cable or component to vga cable they sell on E-bay.I have heard that, as one end is digital and the other is analogue they can not work.Yet, how do they get away with selling these?

thanks

Comcast and Verizon are still using the same Motorola boxes, neither do 1080p currently.

You can't convert HDMI to VGA or VGA to Component video with just a cable from a set top box, this would require a video scan converter which is a separate device.
