Unhappy Can this TV be saved?
While fiddling around with my TV, I plugged a yellow-tipped cord into something I shouldn't have. (Don't ask...I'm just an idiot.) I heard a small pop. Now the power goes on, but the TV has no sound or picture. It displays menus, channel, etc., but that's it. DVDs don't work either.

I suspect I blew the receiver. Before I waste money on a repairman, I'd like some advice on whether a problem like this is likely to be fixable. It's a 32-inch flat screen Toshiba, CRT-type, less than five years old. I'd hate to throw it in the landfill.

Its definitely fixable, sounds like a fuse or protection device has blown,it needs a repairman to visit to verify as to cost of fix,so you have to choose ....fix or not,I know what you mean about sending it to landfill,it all depends on your finances really,it is getting a bit old of course, is it worth fixing ,only you can decide ......

I wish i wasn't saying this because i don't like seeing more electronics going to the landfills.
But, by the time you pay for the services of a repair man, you will have spent the cost of a new replacement TV.
So, short answer is: Buy a new TV.

Are you still here?...might be fixable.....you know anyone techie that might help you?...look for a blown fuse...or diode, or resistor that looks swollen or broken.....if you decide to get a new set, anything you do to this one can't make it worse...so, give it a try....

to repair my 27 inch flatscreen Sony cost 890 $$. and that was before LCD tvs. Opening up the back of a TV is very dangerous, I had to completely unplug it 2 days before the repairman came, because =to relieve the static electricity.
Now I don't know if that is true, but with 60,000 watts, I wouldn't touch anything. The tv was still under warranty, yes, it pooped and had no picture or sound, it was the tuner. Luckily I didn't have to pay the repair, but the part would have been very expensive out of warranty.
At today's prices, buy a new TV

Cool Man up ---grab a screw driver
Take the back off the tv ( WITH IT UNPLUGED ) look around till you see some small barrel fuzes ( about 3/4 of an inch long near where the yellowthingy you pluged into ) they will have silver ends and glass in the middle . The one you blew will be BLACK or GREY in color because you blew it . Pop it out and replace with same sized fuze that cost about 2.00 at Radio shack . If you can't read the amp size on the fuze , take it with you when you go to RADIO SHACK. Not hard . not complicated , and ya darn sure don't have to go buy a new tv or pay a repair man
