Ipod nightmare
Hi guys, this is my first post here. Everything was fine with my Ipod and Itunes until I bought a terra drive to store my music in, obviously I didnt do something correctly because I am a truck driver, not a puter wiz, and there were no instructions with the new terra drive nor Itunes 'help' to assist me. So anyway now my Itunes library comes up but every song is duplicated and when I click a song to play I get the little exclamation point and a message saying the song cannot be found. I am afraid to hook my Ipod up until this all gets fixed. Can anyone refer me to a step by step process of moving my Itunes to an external drive?

Start by backing up your music library.

Edit, Preferences, Advanced. Click on Change.... Select your new music folder. OK your way out. Select File, Library, Consolidate Library....

That's it.

I don't know what good backing up a bad iTunes library will do.

It would help to know what you did with this new drive.

I would suggest not connecting the iPod until you get the issue sorted out or you'll end up deleting the music off the iPod too.

Hello, flyinv55. Welcome to the TSG. And... thanks to you and all the others who keep business moving across our country.

OK, so you had Itunes set up, and there was music in the Itunes library. You did a sync, and things were fine. You bought a drive to store your music in. Did you try to copy the music from Itunes to the terradrive? Is this an external drive? Are there other files on the terra drive and you can access it OK?

Did you change your Itunes library directory? Other than on the Ipod, where does the music reside?

Are you saying that through Itunes, you go to the library, click on a song (that's in the library) and it does not play?

Sorry, lots of questions. But want to follow the path here, so we can get you going again.

Ipod nightmare
I'll answer the questions as well as I can... When I bring up my ITunes library, all the songs are there in duplicate, all 7,000 of them, so now there are 14,000 of them. When I click a song I get a message saying cannot find the file and then a little exclamation point goes into my library on the same line as the song, artist, album etc info. What did I do with the new Terradrive (which is now my E drive)? I plugged it into a port in the back of my computer, then I went back to my C drive where the Ipod and Itunes and all my music folders were and clicked "send to" then sent it all to the "E" drive. Yes the terradrive is an external drive. I have manually begun deleting each duplicated song, one at a time. One example... There is showing in my Itunes library 3 AC/DC albums but when I access my music folders only 2 are found. The library still shows all the songs from the missing album but it is not in the AC/DC music folder.

OK, I might not delete anything until you get resolved what is going on here. You certainly would not want to lose some of your good music.

It sounds to me like you moved your Itunes library (from Itunes) onto your new drive. Did you take anything off of the old C drive?

I'll have to check this evening, but I believe there is a path directory in Itunes. That path may be incorrect; it has the song listing in the library, but when it goes to extract the song, it's not there (because it's in another directory).

Unless you deleted them, these mp3 files (or for Itunes, mp4) are somewhere. I think they are on the terra drive. As far as the duplicates, are you creating new playlists each time? I'm thinking you may be creating new lists each time, and that is where the duplicates are coming from.
