Question about power
So, I've got an Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5360 Ethernet ADSL modem I'm going to give someone who is setting up DSL service. The modem has a power rating of:

18VAC;0.8A50-60Hz

I don't have the power adapter that came with it BUT I have a power adapter that fits the plug on the DSL modem. When I connect the power adapter to the modem and plug it in, the modem powers up and appears to work just fine. The power rating on the adapter is:

INPUT: 120VAC 60Hz 30W
OUTPUT: 12VDC 1.2A

Can this power adapter adequately power the DSL modem or am I risking damaging the modem by using this power adapter?

Thanks!

Peace...

If the modem is expecting 18VAC and you're using 12VDC to power it, I'm somewhat surprised it works at all! I would say no to the adequately powering question.

Yeah, I was surprised as well. In fact, I connected it to a DSL Internet connection and was able to get online and everything!

I'll see if I can find an adequate power adapter.

Peace...

Is it maybe the AMPs that allows the adapter to work? I think the modem accepts 0.8A and the adapter outputs 1.2A.

Could this be it?

Peace...

Well, the difference between 18VAC and 12VDC is pretty significant!

I'm guessing that there is a rectifier at the connection that you happen to be the correct polarity to power the modem through the power connection.

I guess if it works it can't be all bad, but I don't know how comfortable I'd be with that arrangement.
