Solved: I Need TV as Laptop Screen...Please Help
Hey everyone, I have a friend who is trying to hook up his laptop to his TV via a S-Video cable. Is there anyway this can be done? If so, please respond ASAP. =D
___________
EDIT: I'm -assuming- the graphics card in the laptop has output capabilities. So, proceed under the same assumption please. ^_^

If his laptop has an S-Video output it might be as simple as plugging the S-Video cable into the corresponding port on the TV. If the TV does not have S-Video a simple S-Video to RCA composite adapter can be purchased. This are cheap and reliable because the two formats are electrically compatible; it's not like going from VGA to RCA.

Your friend may have to go to Control Panel and mess with his graphics card's settings to get display to go to the TV, but I'd think it should be plug-and-go.

Note that TVs have substantially less resolution than computer screens. Even at 640x480 you won't be able to read a lot of the standard-size text. This setup is not practical for anything other than some full-screen games and videos.

The TV has an S-Video port...so wouldn't that work just as well as the RCA ports? And also...What would he have to do in the Control Panel? (Excuse my illiteracy with computers... >.> Pssshh....and I plan on going to college and majoring in this kind of stuff...Haha. xD

Does the laptop have an S-Video output? If so, it may be a matter of pressing a key or a key combination on the keyboard to activate the S-Video output. You will need a separate adapter cable from the headphone output of the laptop to the audio input of the TV.

Just noticed, dup of: http://forums.techguy.org/miscellane...op-screen.html

Now that you need help with your specific piece of hardware you need to give us the exact make and model of the laptop so we can find appropriate specs and/or manuals for it.

If the TV has an S-Video port you don't need an adapter. The picture quality will be better without one.

Well, the laptop is my friend's dad, and I really don't have access to it, and I don't want to bother him with getting information and such.
--------------
Let's just assume that it supports output. I'd probably have to use the Fn key, and then some other combination of keys to get it to switch over, right? If -that- works...it would only be video, right? What would I have to do to get audio?

To get video to the TV all controls must come from the video card in the laptop, as mine has a geforce 8600 card and I have to do some real hoop jumping to get a TV going. Also,as said above the clarity stinks. You can't read any text. Go through all the windows in your video card. If you can do it, it will be in there
