External drives

hi guys i am thinking of adding a exturnal drive.not knowing anything about them i would like some pros and cons on them. Also maybe what brand to buy not to exceed $100. Don't need one to large . Thanks for your help.

If it's external I don't recommend it for a laptop or any form of portable PC. Other than being outside the Processor there pretty much the same.

We have people in the office that use external drives specifically because they do have laptop PCs. They are running background software that automatically and regularly backs up the contents of the "My Documents" and e-mail folders from the internal hard drive to their external drive. They do it in case the laptop gets lost, stolen or damaged while traveling. They also use the external drive to archive files that they may need to occasionally access in the office but most likely would not need on the road. The installer packages for any software they download is also kept on the external drive.
