i have a compaq desk top with a vga output. Could i just use a scan converter box to convert it to a s-video signal and not spend 160 dollars at best buy?

What kind of inputs does the TV have? If it has VGA, the cable will work. If not, you may need the converter. You can buy a VGA -> NTSC converter for a lot less than $160!

One of the first hits I found: http://www.buy.com/prod/startech-com.../10313177.html
