Solved: Westell DSL 6100
Hello, real basic question. I am about to commission DSL at our new location. The provider (Century Link) recommended we purchase a WESTELL 6100. They did not quote any model numbers. QUESTION: Is this as simple as purchasing a Westell 6100 and connecting from the phone jack to the computer? We will only operate DSL for one computer and our voice telephones. thanks, Needfull

Hi:I would think that if you are only connecting one pc by ethernet cable to the modem,it should be pretty straight forward.
Follow the instructions, step by step, pay particular attention as to the placement of the phone filters, and the prescribed power on sequence of the devices(modem/pc).

Westell 6100 DSL
Thanks. I have not had any luck finding a supplier so I have no instructions. Hopefully I will find a supplier soon. Do I understand correctly the computer talks to the MODEM via ethernet? If so I guess I need an ethernet type cable, or is that a standard phone jack cable? I am still working on the phone filters as well. Thanks again

Hi:There are two types of modems.Modems only or combo modem routers.
If your net DSL service is not providing a modem,I might suggest that you purchase a wired/wireless(router) ,or a "gateway" type modem. That way,if you wish in the future, you can set up a wireless home network consisting of more that one computer.
Modem only,you are correct.Pc communicates with the internet,by a hardwired(ethernet)
direct connection. It is not the phone cable.Your ethernet cable may come with the modem. If not, they are a cheap purchase item at Radio Shack,Best Buy,etc.
Most DSL modems I believe will come with the filters and instructions.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I talked with the phone company again today, they are not pleased about me buying a modem that is not one of theirs. So, after a lengthy phone call, they agreed to supply the MODEM at no cost, but insisted on a nominal recurring fee for tech support. I can handle $3.00 a month. They also lowered my monthly recurring DSL costs. So thank for the inputs, I will try this route for awhile and see how it goes. Appreciate you taking the time to reply, it helped. However, this way I can educate myself some and change horses in the future if needed.
