Free PC "tools" and how to know which are safe
Hi all

I've just upgraded the memory in a computer and got an error message, which Ive posted about elsewhere. In the course of my googling the error message I've come across various free tools (downloads etc) and am wondering how I can be sure these things are safe and not putting bots into my machine. eg Uniblue Registry Booster.

Many thanks

don't touch Uniblue nor any other reg cleaner/booster they will mess up your machine! download anti Malware progs such as SuperantiSpyware and Malwarebytes, both are free and safe

Okay thanks for that. I did download it and ran a scan but it said I had 300 plus registry errors which alerted me to fact it might not be safe. Will uninstall.

Thanks heaps. I have Spybot which I have been told in the past is safe.

you're welcome! Spybot is fine, I use it too, just avoid anything that says it'll clean your computer, if in doubt, just ask

I've learned by my mistakes! I was always tempted to download progs that said they would scan and fix my pc, make it run faster fix my registry I've had to re install Windows a few times because of it,still, better late than never, I wont go down that road again

I've been lucky I guess, something has always stopped me from doing that last thing which would bork my system. My main computing now is Linux, but like to keep an up to date Win system for a couple of things which Win does better for me.
