Copying a DVD to My Videos
My old computer did not have a DVD drive, but my new one which I have had for a few months has and I would like to now upload some DVD's to it.

Could someone please inform me what I have to do to copy a DVD to the My Videos folder?

I assume that I need to download a programme, but are they free or would I have to pay for one?

The DVD is one that I have recorded myself, but could I also copy a pre-recorded one?

My computer operates on Windows XP.

We may not be able to assist you. Most commercial DVDs use some form of encrypted copy protection. Defeating or circumventing such protection is in most cases a violation of laws in the USA. Since this web site is operated in the USA, it follows USA laws.

EDIT: Someone else here may be able to recommend free or low cost software for copying your home made DVDs.

I did actually state, "the DVD is one that I have recorded myself," then went on to ask about a pre-recorded one, so this reply whilst helpful is only 50% so because it did not address my primary query, which related to the DVD that I had myself recorded.

As Swozinakk says, we do have to be really careful to follow the rules, and at present ripping copy-protected commercial DVD's seems to break them. I think your best bet at the moment is simply to google "rip DVD" or something of the sort and find it out for yourself.

No more "helpful" suggestions in circumventing the rules please.
