I have an older Sony analog camcorder that I connected to my PC via RCA jacks (camcorder has no USB, firewire, or S-video) from camcorder to my PC's TV Tuner / capture card. I was able to capture ok off the camcorder (mini-tape cassette) into Wndows Movie Maker. Video was ok but, no audio. After trying everything I then pulled the 2 audio jacks (red & white) from my PC, put them into a 2 -in-1 Y connector, and stuck the Y-connector into the blue audio jack in my PC - leaving the yellow composite cord in the yellow RCA jack. I then had my audio and video ok. MY question is why wouldn't the red & yellow audio jacks on my TV Tuiner / capture work? I'm planning on connecting my VCR and transferring VHS home movies to DVD.

Did your capture card come with a small lead to connect it internally to your sound card or a header on your motherboard? Mine did but I only needed to connect it to capture analogue sound from an analogue device (like yours) through the capture card
Without this lead I believe the card can only capture digital sound from a digital device/camcorder.
That's from memory anyway.
The way you got round it is fine though as you did the right thing without having to go into the case to connect capture card to sound header. You plugged directly into your sound device anyway which was the right thing to do. Stay as you are if you're happy with it.

That's gotta be it. I was worried that there was something wrong with this newer PC. That makes perfect sense - the difference between digital and analog audio. I'm sure I'll have to connect my VCR the same way to convert my VHS tapes to DVD. I have heard that in my case you can use a digital camcorder as a "pass thru" device and it will convert everything to digital format before the video / audio saves to the HD. Problem is I don't have a digital camcorder. thanks for your response

Yes you can use a camcorder as a pass through device only if it has the correct in/out connections. Not all do. But a capture card is cheaper
I forgot. I have already converted VCR to DVD and I connect the VCR sound phono plugs directly to the sound card. So it is as we say.
