Unhappy Video Data Burn Is Hideously Slow Since Reinstall
I recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro (over old Windows, not a complete reinstall, nor a reformat) and one of the puzzlements has been that my DVD player and CD/DVD burner CD Rom drive (Sony DVD RW DRU-810A) burns data DVDs much, much slower.

The burn is 2 to 2.5 whereas it used to be considerably higher. Whether in fact a higher rate, it now takes well over an hour to burn a DVD data disk. My computer is clean, defragmented, etc. I uninstalled the CD Rom driver and rebooted and that doesn't seem to have sped things up. I have Googled this issue, but can find no specific troubleshooting plan.

I KNOW that my PC and its recording ROM is capable of faster speed.

What gives? Any ideas?

Open Device Manager, and then expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers branch. Double click the primary and secondary channel in turn, then check the advanced properties tab. In the Current Transfer Mode, see if any of them list PIO as the current mode.

Hi, JohnWill,

I had, in fact, already checked. Everything is DMA, no PIO setting. Thanks for the suggestion though. I believe the speed of the blank CD or DVD has a lot to do with it. But my older 2X blank DVDs were still much faster than the burn rate I am presently getting.

What other factors might be influencing it? I did upgrade the driver for my Sony DVD RW DRU-810A ROM.

Driver? You need no drivers for optical drives with Windows!
