Solved: Lost "window can perform the same action" window
I have a Sony Vaio desktop computer and somehow I lost the function when I insert a cd or dvd I no longer get the window that says, "Windows can perform the same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device of this kind. What do you want to do?"
Then you have options such as use realplayer to open, etc.
I now have to go into the drive and open it myself.
Any help would be much apppreciated.
Thanks,
Elizabeth

Hi EW ....

I think I may have just answered this question for someone else .... but what he wanted was a little different. Let me try to explain ...

The computer will allow you to make a choice ... either to make a selection each and every time you, let's say, want to play a CD.
OR ... it will allow you to choose ONCE, and then every time that same action comes up, it will make your choice for you (based on your original selection)

If you follow the directions below, it should help.
Before you start, if you can, print out the directions below. It will save you having to create two windows and to go back and forth between them.

If you CAN print, then ignore this and go straight to number 1.

______________________________________________________________________
If you CANNOT print, then do this first and it will open up a second window. This way you can go back and forth between the windows.... .
OK.. Just like on Number 1, Select "Start",
then "My Computer, and right click on your CD or DVD drive.
Now go down to Number 4 on your list...
______________________________________________________________________

1- click on "Start" (bottom left corner of screen)

2- Find where it says "My Computer" and click open.

3- Once it opens, you will see several components listed, such as a C: drive, maybe a D: drive (for some), a CD/DVD drive (or something like that.. could say, CD drive or DVD drive or CD-RW drive or DVD-RW drive)

4- Select the drive and right click on it, then look down the list for "Properties" and select/click on it.

5- In "properties", you'll see tabs on the top of the little window. Select "auto-play".

6- Near the top, you will see a drop-down menu with a small black arrow pointing down.
If you click on it, it will list things like: Music, Videos, Music CD, DVD Movies, etc.
NOW....below that drop-down menu, you'll see a category named "Actions. There will be two choices. The first is: Select an action to perform. You want that one. It will allow you to go into each category in the list, and select how you want it handled.
- The second says: Prompt me each time to choose an action. If you choose the second one, then you will have to select your choice each time you perform that action, which was what you said that you DIDN'T want.
7 - Make your choices.... then That should fix your problem.... so try it again by restarting your computer, then when windows is loaded, try putting in your cd or dvd and see if it works.

Good luck and I hope that helps!!!
